Finding people to save, but can't open box

Hello again,
In the past month or so, I have come across about 6 to 8 people being held inside of a tent. I kill the red NPC's and normally one has a key. There is normally a box next to the person to save, but the key will not work to unlock the box. So is there stuff in the box and why will the key not work?
It says this key does not go to that or something like that.

The key is used to "release [the kidnapped NPC] from their chains". Double click the key and target the kidnapped NPC to release them and gain fame/karma. You now can choose to escort them to their destination or not, up to you. The chest, on the other hand, requires the lockpicking skill and lockpicks. Careful, these chests are trapped as well!

Well if that is the case that too does not work, I have released the blue NPC everytime with out the key. I just click on them twice and it says they are released. LOL
Now what about the lock box?

If the key is in your pack when you double click them, it releases the chains.

with the locked box, you have to use lockpicking skill. Then you gotta deal with the trap on the box.

This has been brought up before. The key was intended to unlock the npc, but every one I've seen is simply blank here, and unnecessary regardless. It has nothing to do with the chest. Magic unlock + telekinesis should be sufficient for these.

Oh, does the unlock spell work with those? I was wondering what that was useful for.

I noticed you don't need the key to unlock their chains. But they don't seem to be escort-able until you use they key on them.

I've never used the key and haven't had a problem.

You can unlock the NPC's without the key and can escort them the same as you would with the key. The key only lets you gain fame when releasing them, without it you get nothing but the escort, and the box can be picked or unlocked with magic

I can provide summation of relevant facts:
  • bug or not, the key is absolutely unneccessary to release and/or escort the NPC; I've never even taken these off the mobs' corpses
  • the crate can be opened with the Unlock spell; I'm not sure what level of lockpicking is required, but it would be extremely low, perhaps 25-35
  • the crate will always be trapped, but this can be avoided by using the Telekinesis spell on the crate from a distance; again, I don't know how much skill in Detect/Remove would be required, but extremely low skills would suffice
  • Sometimes there is also a locked chest, in the opposite corner from the crate: this chest behaves like a Lvl2 (I think more like LVl3) Treasure Map chest, and requires pretty high Lockpicking w/ 60+ Detect to crack open (it is likewise always trapped); unfortunately, the treasure in the chest is of extremely-low value (less than 100 gp; maybe 1-3 magic items)
These camps present challenges and rewards for new players and/or developing characters; otherwise, I simply hoover them up whenever I go Treasure-Hunting.

Well that ****s for me I built a total non-magic user. My person is total fighting only. I never had the patients to learn or deal with the magic aspect of the game. So I guess I will have to create a new character and make that one 100% magic user.

Warriors and magic are not mutually exclusive. As a matter of fact, I'd highly recomend having at least 30-35 magery on your warrior for convinience/survival purposes, mainly to recall; magic trap pouches to break paralysis; cast reactive armor, protection and magic reflect on yourself. All of theses together exponentially increase your ability to stay alive.

If it is an RP issue, pick up a bit of LP (not sure how much you'd need), stand one tile clear from the chest and pop it open, just be sure to be at full HP's. I can't imagine NPC's camp chests being trapped high enough to kill you.

Yea I know, but I cant spread the points out. I have been building up a Warrior/Maker or all things that I can.
