House Security

I played UO from day 1 to somewhere in the 2A era, and I remember an unreal amount of house break in tricks. Summoning a horse behind the tables. Pillows to walk over tables. Etc etc. Can someone please inform me what exactly makes a house safe on this shard? :)

I dont really know the full answer but the taste housing insecurity left in my mouth on OSI servers lead me to this.

Only put valuables in secures or the bank.

Big weight items in the bank (since secures are 400 stones).

It is very easy to farm 40 or so K for a small and not too tough to save 150 for a large patio. That should be all the secure space you need.

Houses may be 100% unlootable on this server (i dont know...) but i dont think i could ever let myself trust the system...

There is always someone finding a new way to do something... As far as i can remember i never saw a secure or bankbox loot sploit...

There are no house break in bugs that exist as of now. At least none that we are aware of at the moment. If your house door is locked it's secure as long as you don't lose the key.

Thanks for the quick replies! What about the 'oldschool' (as far as I know) trick of setting up a line of locked down tables from wall to wall, so you can leave the door unlocked, and just move a table to get back when you needed to?

That will work just fine too.

Can you only change the locks on private houses? I have a public house with a vendor out front and I don't see the option to change the locks.

Public house means no keys right?

A public house has no key associated with it. The option is also removed in this case on the menu. Only private houses may be locked with a key.

Weird. I can lock the door to my public house. Question... if I turn my public house into a private house with a vendor on it... will the vendor be OK and stay?

Houses should not be lockable when declared public. Here is a patch note for the house sign patch when you declare a house to be public.
- Declare building public -
Only the house owner may do this.
This choice only appears for private houses.
Makes the door always openable and unlockable.
Makes the building eligible for vendor placement.
This is obviously a bug and should be fixed eventually if it is letting you lock the doors.

As for vendors...
- Declare building private -
Only the house owner may do this.
This choice only appears for public houses.
This option will fail with a message if there are vendors in the house.
Relocks the front door.
Resets the sign to the standard house sign type.
Removes the guard region if any.

I'll fix this right away.

You may find yourself locked out of your public house if the door is locked when the fix goes in. If so, please page for assistance.
