What is the difference between a "newbied" item and a "blessed" item?

newbied items are only safe if you die with them on a blue character, being a criminal is fine as well.

blessed items can be worn by anyone, including murderers and stay with you when you die.

both newbied & blessed items only stay with you if they are either equipped or in the top layer of your backpack, if you place them inside a bag and die they will fall to your corpse and are eligible to be looted

So if you're Blue or Gray, there is no difference between newbied or blessed.

If you're Red, newbied items will drop to your corpse upon death.

How about from a theft point of view? I believe blessed or newbied items cannot be stolen from the top level of your pack. Does being Red affect this?

Correct. Newbied & blessed items cannot be stolen at all, regardless of their location in your backpack.
