Sandals

Why does everyone pay so much for blessed sandals? And why do you care what color they are? Is it just me or do the "special" colors all look like normal colors (except of course neon)?
Is it just a money sink / pride thing? Do they confer some benefit that can't be had elsewhere (free AR that doesn't have to be repaired / doesn't affect meditation)? Don't boots give AR as well... would blessed boots be worth just as much? If not, why not?
If the answer is that "they are worth a lot because people want them because they are worth a lot because people want them..." that's a fine answer.
