For PvP and PvM, all input would be appreciated. On another note, I'm new to the shard and have little experience with the t2a era. Thanks for any and all advice.

Well, currently melee is a little more gimp than it should be but it really boils down to whether or not you want to use poison.

If you want poison, go with swords.
If you don't want to use poisoning, go with macing.
(Note: you can buy poisoned weapons or use a mule, you don't have to have poisoning on the character).

Swords are, for the most part, better. There's more options, which is nice, especially at the heavy and slow end (halberd), which is actually most helpful in many PvP and PvM situations. Maces aren't that great, and are really only useful in PvP, if your opponent is willing to stick around for an extended fight. In which case, you will have more of an advantage as the fight progresses and you beat their armor to pulp. But, fights almost never last that long.

There is almost no mathematical argument for using maces. Pick them if you like the "flavor"; if you're a powergamer, you're almost certainly better off with swords.

No, not EVERYONE will carry 20 red pots, but anyone worth their salt will.

EDIT: Again, as Mikel said, at the end of the day, it's a personal choice. If you like maces, hit it! I don't see THAT big a difference between maces/fencing/swds in terms of one being so much more effective than the other. I have seen ppl who are skilled win with any of those 3 skills on a dexxer.
