what's the purpose of skill gains after reaching the cap?

disclaimer: /me = noob

I've reached the skill cap and am now herding for max stats, it should finish in about 10-20 minutes. I'm wondering now, since after that I'm going to start GMing skills - is there any purpose to training something, which base value will stay at about 0? as I understand it - base value tells us what we can do, which categoy of animal is tameable to us, which circle of magic we can use etc., and the adjusted value tells us the probability of the outcome. so, are there any skills, which are any useful with low base skill and relatively high adjusted skill? for example, my herding is now 22,5 adjusted and 0 real and the animals listen to me relatively well with this.

also, does the adjusted skill have a cap and/or other limitations?

This depends on how you play. Some people prefer to min/max their skills. Detect Hidden are good examples of this.

my projected build (tamer/fencer) goes like this:

fencing
tactics
anatomy
healing
resist
animal lore
taming
and, uh... magery? not quite sure yet.

stats are 100 100 25

is there something to supplement this nicely? detect hidden seems nice. does it work fine with base 0 or should I increase it to .1 or something?

aidenn, you should make 2 separate chars. A tamer fencer won't work. How are you going to gate your animals?

Make a fencer:

Tactics
Fencing
Anatomy
Healing
Resist
Magery
Some other skill you want

Make a tamer:

Taming
Lore
Magery
Resist
Meditation
Eval Int
Wrestling

Poisoning on the first template for all use tourneys...

Wrestling if you want to dex in a standard tourney...

Hiding if you want to be gay like mongoose.

not possible? huh... but what to choose for the 7th GM then? I though taming would be good, since I'd be a good fighter and would have the ability to distract the enemy with pets as well. poisoning seems nice, but it's bad karma. I know that for a GM tamer lore is also necessary, so I'd have to give up a bit on magery. what's the deal with gating animals anyway?

oh yeah, and why would I need wrestling on a warrior char? i've seen it a couple times, that it's for tourneys and all. but why?

how do you plan to heal your pets? and gate them around? these are things you need to think about when making a dexer-tamer.

While your template isn't greatly thought out: I DO remember people having some skills at or below 20%.. Detect hidden was one, I beleive Camping was also, and I remember hiding was as well..
Magery at about 20-40 would also be a good idea as you can use scrolls without fizzling.. etc

well, i thought that instead of healing i'd just let them die and tame new ones. ;)

Don't listen to them, you can most certainly me a fencer tamer. Just don't waste time with pets like dragons and you don't necessarily need max taming. Use animals such as hell hounds (firebreath), scorpians (greater or deadly poison), etc.

that's what I though. fight like a normal warrior (without depending on animals at all times) and just use them as a bonus distracting/harming force. a bit of magery for recall and I'm set.

alas, wouldn't I need GM taming for a hell hound? it needs 84 skill, so I'd need 100 in taming and 20 in lore (80% taming + 20% lore) for it to obey my orders. or not?

I dunno, im not a taming expert. But I know there are several orcs over the years who put them to good use.

This thread bleeds RP...

If you want to be able to command your pets...you need taming and lore. If you want useful pets you need both in the high 90s...to GM.

DP scorpions die to an ebolt/explo pretty quick.
