Item ‘Smashing’ and Monster Movement Nov 27 2000

Monsters may no longer be ‘trapped’ by barricading them behind various objects in the game world. They will now attempt to maneuver around the objects and in some cases may smash the objects barring their movement.

Items that are locked down, secure, or strongboxes may not be smashed. Containers, if smashed, will spill their contents onto the ground.




Currently monsters smash boxes not locked down...but thats not what it looks like happened in this era.

A monsters ability to smash items/containers that block their path is clearly a patch that was added after the T2A era.

Good eye.

Actually, item smashing has a sordid history.

Item smashing was first introduced with the 12/3/98 patch as follows:

Monsters will pick up and destroy items that block them as follows:

• The item must be moveable.
• The creature cannot be a pet.
• The item cannot be locked down.
• The item must be impassable.
• Monsters can destroy an item anytime.
• Human NPCs must be attacking someone to destroy an item.
• Animals must be attacking someone to destroy an item.
• The creatures will destroy stacked items one at a time.

Then, on 12/22/99, item smashing was temporarily disabled as follows:

Monsters will no longer destroy objects that block their path. This is a temporary change and will be changed back.

Finally, you have the November 2000 patch which re-enabled item smashing. So, item smashing was enabled for most of the era.

I do actually remember monsters smashing stuff while I played.
