Alright, I have heard so many different answers on this, hoping to get a straight one through this:

Exactly what pieces of clothing protect sandals by layering on top of them? I know long pants do, but do short pants? Kilts? I have heard yes and no on both of those. Some clarity would be awesome! Thanks a lot ahead of time...

i believe anything that counts as legs the reason people like long pants is they last the longest i believe have most durability.

until your pants slots breaks all damage is done to the pants not to the sandals

i think u need also ar on ur pants not sure
