I can't seem to get my macros to close menus after smithing an item. Am I doing something wrong? The macros are making me lag and sometimes causing my account to loose connection.

Not sure exactly what you're doing that's leaving your menus up, but if you have too many menus up and stacked upon each other you will indeed lose connection. This sounds like your macro is a bit messed up to begin with.

Aside from fixing the macro so that the menu isn't left hanging, you can record a macro with a menu response of zero. This is in effect, closing the menu gump. You can do this by recording a macro of you right clicking on the Menu Gump.
