AFAIK if a weapon carrier wants to attack a mob they have to be in war mode to do so. Unless I'm missing the obvious?

Don't need it: Razor Hotkeys, in Targetting submenu: Target closest non-friendly will target the closest non-blue creature or player. Then Attack Last. I use this almost exclusively. Also, Set Last Target and then Attack Last can be used if you need to target an enemy who is not the closest non-blue to you (but I usually just run up to them so they BECOME the closest).

Ah thanks for the info. I've not really made use of Razor beyond crafting/fishing/recall macros, I'll have to have a deeper root around in it sometime.

So is war mode still needed for melee attacks? I'm specifically thinking of dexxers.

War mode exists because razor didn't in our era (and I'd venture a guess that most people in the early days of UO would click or dbl-click to do everything).

The real reason we need war mode is to look bad ass. Try going in and out of war mode thats how you dance UO style.

its useful for tabbing in and out of combat.

i still use war mode and double click things in some situations

One other thing no one has mentioned is that it lets living toons see you as a ghost. As far as I know, you can't cast a blind resurrection spell, you have to be able to see your target
