30-40k worth of gold for gm mage
med is gmed aorund 90 some magery
once you have gm mage you should have around 90-93 resist.
resist from 95-GM takes a LOT and is not worth it on your own (none of my chars have gm resist)
melee skills are easier gained on monsters than other players, if macroign on other players, probably around 3-4000 bandages - bandages are about 2gp per.
so all in all, probably around 60-70k for a 6x with 95 resist.
Plus you will need a house to macro in... so anotehr 40k on top.

Compared to OSI, this shard is lightning fast. Compared to many other free shards, it's a tad bit slow. Once you have funds and a house, making a 7x mage can be done in under 48 hours

From what Ive seen a lot of what has been said in this thread is wrong. 30-40k to gm magery is way off to me. You simply cant GM magery with 30k, not possible. 40-45 is accurate from my experiences, usually around 45.
Also Roadkill I lub you but nobody is making a 7x tank mage in under 48 hours. Maybe somwhere in the range of 60-72 is a little more reasonable, and yes Im talking with zero down time.
For bandages simply mark runes to the sheep and cotton pens. If you cant mark, use the moongates. Using moongates, I can shear sheep in jhelom pens, yew pens, and collect cotton from moonglow and skara cotton fields in under 10 mins. This will yield you enough bandages to GM your melee skills. If some of the sheep are sheared or you need more for magery/resist, simply hit them all the spots again. Each loop will yield about 2500-3000 bandages.
Just seems to me like a little exagerating is going on to make things sound more accessible here, when in reality building that first character when you have nothing to start with can be excrutiating. Sure, after you have the resources, gold, and a house it all becomes significantly easier, but it still takes time.

The recent resist parties may have some sway in what people think.

Should I make a 7x and log my time? A 7x in 48hrs with self-funding is more than possible (farm with a bard while your guy is macroing, and you'll be able to glide through making a mage)

I'd think the ONLY thing that would hold this back from being under 48 hours is the last 5-10 points of resist, right? So you can have a 6.9x GM in 48 hours no problem. Few extra hours on the end for that last bit of resist.

Re-read my statement from earlier.
Resist parties can literally GM your resist in 12 hours.
