Proposed Rules Changes to AFK Macroing
There has been a lot of debate regarding AFK macros, creating wealth, and transferring wealth going on lately. I recently saw a proposed rule that I thought was quite simple and clear. It seemed to address all the issues that people had regarding this debate and i'd simply like to put that rule and some variations up for a poll.
For details and exceptions to proposed rules, please click on the
[+] following the Proposed rules for more information.
Keep in mind: This is for AFK or Unattended Macroing ONLY.
Proposals:
Proposed Rule Addition #1:[+] "There shall be no AFK Macroing that involves ANY type of Movement."
Movement Includes:
- Anything that causes the character to "Re-Sync".
- Facing character in another direction (turning).
- Mounting/Dismounting.
- Walking/Running.
- Teleporting.
- Recalling.
- Gating.
- Any action that an Admin thinks is a clear attempt to circumvent this rule.
Exceptions: None.
Proposed Rule Addition #2:[+] "There shall be no AFK Macroing that involves ANY type of Movement -OR- ANY Transfer of ANY Items/Resources."
Movement & Transfer Includes:
- Anything that causes the character to "Re-Sync".
- Facing character in another direction (turning).
- Placing Items in Containers.
- Any Transfer of Items.
- Mounting/Dismounting.
- Dropping of Items.
- Dragging of Items.
- Walking/Running.
- Teleporting.
- Recalling.
- Stealing.
- Gating.
- Any action that an Admin thinks is a clear attempt to circumvent this rule.
Exceptions:
Working from a Bank Box, so long as NO movement is occuring and no gathering or acquiring of items/resources outside of the character and his/her bankbox is occuring. This will allow new players to work Magery, etc...
Proposed Rule Addition #3:[+] "There shall be no AFK Macroing that involves ANY type of Movement -OR- ANY Transfer of ANY Items/Resources unless ALL AFK actions are done within a Character's Home."
Movement & Transfer Includes:
- Anything that causes the character to "Re-Sync".
- Facing character in another direction (turning).
- Gathering/Scavenging of Items.
- Placing Items in Containers.
- Any Transfer of Items.
- Mounting/Dismounting.
- Dropping of Items.
- Dragging of Items.
- Walking/Running.
- Teleporting.
- Recalling.
- Stealing.
- Gating.
- Any action that an Admin thinks is a clear attempt to circumvent this rule.
Exceptions: Any AFK actions that start, are wholely done within, and finish within a players home are exempt.
Working from a Bank Box, so long as NO movement is occuring and no gathering or acquiring of items/resources outside of the character and his/her bankbox is occuring. This will allow new players to work Magery, etc...
Proposed Rule Addition #4:[+] "There shall be no AFK Macroing that involves ANY Transfer of ANY Items/Resources unless ALL AFK actions are done within a Character's Home."
Transfer of Items Includes:
- Gathering/Scavenging of Items.
- Placing Items in Containers.
- Any Transfer of Items.
- Dropping of Items.
- Dragging of Items.
- Stealing.
Proposed Rule Addition #5:[+] "There shall be no AFK Macroing that involves ANY Transfer of ANY Items/Resources."
Transfer of Items Includes:
- Gathering/Scavenging of Items.
- Placing Items in Containers.
- Any Transfer of Items.
- Dropping of Items.
- Dragging of Items.
- Stealing.
- Any action that an Admin thinks is a clear attempt to circumvent this rule.
Exceptions: Any AFK actions that do not involve the gathering, transferring, or dropping of any items/resources are exempt.
Note: This allows Auto-Bots wandering the countryside as long as they are not gathering, transferring, or dropping any items. Shooting arrows does
NOT qualify as "transferring or dropping" an item.
Working from a Bank Box, so long as NO movement is occuring and no gathering or acquiring of items/resources outside of the character and his/her bankbox is occuring. This will allow new players to work Magery, etc...
As always, constructive comments are welcomed.

What about restocking from banks?

I would, personally, categorize that under "Any Transfer of Items" or however I worded it.
Keep in mind, this is while AFK only and is a proposal that may need to be edited and adjusted.

There are several options, some do not include transfer of items at all.

I voted for #7, no changes needed. I do not see any reason why policy should encourage one playstyle over the other. If i want to spend my time developing uber efficient hands-free macros, then that's my perogative. If I want to spend my time manually creating and selling items, then let the richer experience be my reward.
AFK resource gathering is illegal, that is the only policy needed.

In response, I would pose this question:
Can not
actually playing the game even be a playstyle?

I'd be for:
"There shall be no AFK Macroing that involves ANY type of Movement unless ALL AFK actions are done within a Character's Home."
But there's no option for that.
There's no transfer except in house, and no movement and transfer except in house... but there's no option for just no movement except in house.
Limiting transfer is too tough on new players working magery which has already been pointed out.

Would you like to see Bank Boxes as an exemption to the rules, so long as movement does not occur?

That's one way of going with it. I think reg buying afk in Del might still be possible with that option though, which I'm not a fan of. But that's still alot better than the current rules IMO.

People don't tend to go to the polls to vote against their own personal interests. Best way to make enemies is to try and change something. Voted on #1. Have hated all afk macroing ever since it made the game less UO and more SOLO.

I have added on to the exemptions of the Items/Resources rules to include this:
Working from a Bank Box, so long as NO movement is occuring and no gathering or acquiring of items/resources outside of the character and his/her bankbox is occuring. This will allow new players to work Magery, etc...
Please re-vote if you need to and sorry for the inconvenience. I thought this a necessary change.

I dunno, it seems to be
your playstyle?
But seriously, I do think it is a totally legitimate playstyle. And, I think having rules full of exceptions, and clauses is a bad idea. What makes this shard and game great is it's laissez-faire approach to rules and gameplay. If it's not game-breaking leave it alone, enough said.

The same problem with the real world is the sorta same issue with this game. Giving people the ability to do everything electronically and alone. It takes away the social aspect of the game. I started doing the same thing after a while. I don't even like talking to people in the actual game. I could go macro and use irc. Why even play the game? Just hang out in irc.

I'm all for a "hands off" approach towards players actually playing the game, but I do not feel the same way for unattended gameplay...which is probably pretty obvious at this point.
