UO Second Age

Hey all!

I just had a very unpleasant experience on our great shard this morning which Id like to share. I have a tamer afk-macroing at the Compassion shrine (which is fully legal). A little now and then people lure monsters in there to disrupt macroers and its fine, part of the game etc.

Now, a player named Wyte does the same thing. After us pulling a monster in and out of there I say (perhaps somewhat unthoughtfull but mostly it was in jest) "lol stop being so childish". All of a sudden he bursts into a flaming where he's calling me lazy and that Im "fucking with him". He said things like "you're lazy" and "you've probably not worked a single day in your life" (i was about to go to work btw), "this lazy new generation" (Im even active in the Swedish national marine cour, usually its notvery lazy)etc. There were more things but this is what I remember. And he promised to continue to disrupt me every single day (thats no problem of course, part of the game).

What concerned me was the kind of personal level this player let such a trivial thing become. He started harrassing me in a personal way, judging me for things completely out of his own knowledge.

Usually these things don't get to me but I can't help but feeling quite offended. The things were not said ironically but were meant to harm. People shouldn't accept this kind of behaviour on the simple grounds of "this is the internet, relax". Even the Wild West had to become a place of order eventually. I believe the same thing goes for the internet as it becomes a greater part of human daily life. Just because you're behind a screen it doesn't mean you can skip all sence of ethics and moral. Real people are behind screens. And this morning I, as a real person, got a bad start on my working day because of this.

I don't write this to get this guy punished, the rules do not handle the subject of harrassment even (maybe cause its common sense), but to state that I don't accept this kind of behaviour and it's my hope that many of us agree this should be a friendly environment for us all. (evil within the game itself is of course acceptable!)

I would just like to hear that people dislike the kind of behaviour Wyte showed this morning. And say to him that it was not neccessary at all to start attacking me personally. Yes it may be lame to afk-macro but its completley within the rules of the server. And of course, you may kill my player but not kill my spirit before a real day of work ahead.

Often in a scenario like this, I'd simply bring in someone who could fight and take a count for my trouble.

Player justice In the Wild West it would be an old fashioned duel but we sometimes aren't even that civil.

Sure he likely wouldn't care or be carrying any loot, but would make me feel better.

You are not completely alone Jakob. A similar rant of mine can be seen above. Its a love/hate dichotomy I have for UO.

the conclusion i've had to accept is that the only recourse for such blatant depravity is to completely ignore such people. Their mentality is clearly on a level to which you should never lower yourself to and any rational discussion with such children will do nothing to change their behavior.

Personally for me once a player has demonstrated this type of complete ignorance I move them to ignore. You will find they have very little power to further demonstrate their utter idiocy when you give them nothing in return but silence.

In all honesty, this is just you complaining to someone( the community ). I just started back here but have been pk'd 4 times since macroing my character up. Every time i come to my computer i say the same thing, ahhh UO again. This game has always been split between trolls and trammies. Dont take offense to personal ingame attacks, like you said, you have a job and are (assuming) enlisted in the reserves. Im sure you pay bills and cook your own meals and live your life like every other average human adult. The thing to remember is that, while you do all these things, you play this game to escape, to have fun virtually, younger adults or even kids who play this game may be escaping bullying or unleashing bottled up feelings they may have. It's their right to do so, as this is a safer and legal alternative to real-life trolling which has physical and often times legal consequences. Let them have their fun, you have yours, just remember, thats what makes UO.

Alt + O client options, bottom right corner (filters), target the offender. Sweet peace and quiet.

To be honest, I have to agree that some of the stuff that goes on is pretty disgusting (though I generally find personal attacks directed at me comical since they are so absurd).

Also very good point here. This is how I cope with the fact that I am playing the same game as people who choose to act like this in game. I can choose to take it personally, or as should be done with MOST internet negativity it should be ignored completely. The person neither knows me nor has accurate information about my personal life and is most likely hoping that they are getting a rise out of me by use of their intentionally inflammatory comments.

But I thought it was cA who ruins the shard?!

The problem wasn't the game mechanical harrassment, this is all part of the game (getting pked alot, someone ruining for you in game etc). I'm not complaining about that at all, that don't even bother me. My point was the personal attack which suddenly moved focus from inside the game to the outside of the game. You might have a point that instead of unleashing bad behavior IRL they could channel it through a game. In some cases this is probably true.
