wants to know exactly what people mean in forums when they're bidding and say "deed". I assume this means house deed but is it literally a deed that gets passed over or is it the price of a deed?

It is a house deed. So long as you are not a murderer (i.e. red), then house deeds are newbiefied and thus safe in your main bag. It's much easier and safer to transfer 43.3k of gold in the form of a house deed as opposed to trying to trade in the gold (as no one can hold that much gold coin in their bag at once).

all so house deeds can be redeemed at the carpenter shop for the full price when u do this the gold is deposited straight into your bank
