Unable to connect to shard?

I was not able to connect to the server this morning for Double Domination event. However, I did manage to connect two minutes after event closed... Anyone else experienced anything similar?
Also, I get terrible freeze lag on this server. If it is a server wide lag it is acceptable. If it is just me lagging, I must fix this or I cannot actually pvp here...Ive played on wireless before and that kind of lag is too much. 1v1 is completly not possible.
