Rares for newbs!

As I'm learning more about this game and the value of rare items, I have to ask this seemingly obvious question- How do you get them?
Do you just walk around towns and dungeons trying to pick up everything you see (barrels, rope, fruit bowls, etc)?
Do the rares spawn in addition to the decorative items that are lying around, or does an item just become available to be picked up?

Just remember that the link shared is from 2011, it may or may not be 100% up to date but it's certainly a great crash course and resource still for new players.

and good luck getting anything of value, there is a "Rares Mafia" here that camps unattended with scripts waiting to pick up the item on appearance. again - good luck.

You should go to the candelabra spawn when its being camped, the scripts used are damn good. The only way you will kill a camper is with multiple people and deaths. I think if they lose 1hp they spam guards and anyone/thing dies that attacked him. It was a bitch of a time trying to kill this unattended guy.
