I never was interested in stair building, but I thought damaged books still worked also despite all the patches.

Nah, you can raise z axis of a gf foot stool, or anything for that matter, with other items. I use raw fish steaks because you can cook them to remove them without the object above them dropping.
As far as I know you can still use gf footstools.
