Can anyone tell me the best tactic for defending myself; I have a typical mage character. I pretty much play alone and haven’t pvped any so I was wondering what is a good spell combo or what is a good stance to take when I get attacked. Just some helpful advise for someone that doesn’t have any pvp experience would be appreciated.
Thanks

Up until a couple months ago you could stack protection items. Was pretty funny having vanq halberds hit for next to nothing.
Here's a few things you can do:
1. make a razor macro to recall to a safe place
2. keep magic reflection on whenever possible and/or carry a reflect item and set a razor hotkey to equip it(might as well add a protection/bless/strength item too)
3. always carry greater heal/cure/refresh potions
4. practice timing your heals(when you can heal through an evil mage lord dumping on you while you're just standing still you're getting the hang of it)
5. carry at least 5 trapped pouches
6. DON'T PANIC
Eventually you should be able to play around and fight back a bit - just make sure you recall before you run out of mana or be ready to run.
You won't get many kills against a good standard skills pvper with a pure mage. You have to be good AND a little lucky to do it in a 1v1 situation.

Thanks Caveman ,I think the "dont panic " is my downfall !
"Panic is a sudden fear which dominates or replaces thinking " yep I definitely got that

Caveman got it right.Carry a lot of stuff on you so when you die the pk will be more than happy.Get experience before adding more loot for the pk .Since with more loot , you will enter panic mode more easily . Make sure you're installed(house etc) , so dying and being looted won't hurt that much. You don't want to panic because you have all your good wand/stuff on you.We panic because we have good loot inside our bag and don't want to lose it.So keep yourself light when pve'ing.Get experience before adding extra on yerself. Some pk have killed hundred of ppl like yourself and been playing uo for years. So don't feel bad if you get rocked. It's happens to everyone.
Carrying 5 pounch now.1 that just enough.if you use 5 pounch during a fight .. Holy crap. The Pk really suck or you're very good. But since you're asking for advice i doubt it's the latter and that the pk really suck .Pk's normaly don't seek long fight. They want the *insta* kill.
Pk normaly don't spam paralyze. They might not try again after the first attempt. Why wasting Mana/time if that one got 10 pounch of thyself? They normaly don't do it more than twice .Veteran Pk's will study you after attacking you. They will know right in the bat if you're a newbies or not.If you put too much pressure on yourself like reading the 1000000000000 advice you will only screw up.Because you have no experience.
Magic reflection now. It's very rare they start with a flamestrike. Most likely a flame arrow or harm.I don't spam it every time.Especialy has a warrior and i'm fighting pve caster.Unless you love to spend reagents. If you're so concerned about yer magic reflection up.Than maybe you're not ready to fight a pk.
And finnaly when you see a red name popping.Don't think twice. They aren't here to chit chat with you.Recall or prepare yourself.Too many time i have seen ppl just stand there idle waiting to be attacked.
Finnaly .. it's a video game. You don't die for real.Do you what you do and if you die you die.Nothing to be ashamed for.

If you heal thru their mana dump, chances are they will leave and come back with a friend.
If they see you at a spot, they will check back a few times.
You don't need a fancy recall macro that targets your rune for you.. Just always make sure that your rune isn't buried in your bag. I put it in the lower left corner. If you have good instincts about hitting the recall macro right when you see red letters, you'll get out 9 times out of 10. Remember, they can't disrupt the spell when you already have a target.

really easy not to get killed, keep magic reflect up and when you see a red name... recall.
We will come in and have weaken precasted to disrupt your first recall, but if you have magic reflect we need to do it twice. If you are really that bad and can't get a recall off in the time it takes us to do 2 weakens, well just run and try to recall. Plus keep healing potions on you.

A mage should always have an offensive spell ready to target any adversary, whether he be red or monster. Those few seconds I am sure have costed your life already several times.
With Evaluating intel and magery at 100, a good flame or meteor strike would be defestating enough to make the threat pause to heal or assess the situation. By then you could recall, gate or continue to fry the baddie.

In other words be ready...even in peaceful environments to go aggressive. Cast the spell until the target dissappears and then recast again. It's better to be ready then to lose everything.

If you're gonna use this method stick with MS...what pk doesnt come in with reflect not up? Don't think you want to eat a reflected FS...

I usually start the "defend" with a pre-casted heal and my "useonce" agent ready to go... If I am unable to precast I will usually attack with "fast cast" abilities, then I work my way up to Ebolt. If they are not dead or close to it by the time I reach 50 Mana I will keep casting mini-heal mainly because im being dumped on because the guy thinks im done attacking. I stop attempting to heal when I feel hes wasted enough mana for me to do so.. at which time my mana should be about 75ish and his hp's should be about 70ish.. the end. Or flee...
Depends on how cowardly I feel at the time. Or how full I am... Most of the time I stay to the end just because that's all this game was about. If you PvE'd and laughed at those killing you instead of run away... there's no more of a greater thrill imo. Especially since you know that person spent nothing but time trying to learn new ways to kill you.
VOID: Purple Potions - if these are used by either combatant the game is over. I win button...

Lately the only thing I've been seeing precast is Flamestrike. Really funny to see a red run up, flamestrike me with reflect up, then watch them run away to heal. They usually return as I'm recalling out.
