There are era colored veins, you don't need to patch. You do need minimum skill to filnd them though. It's 60 or 65 for dull copper I think.

I have a master miner and there are several spots that every time I swing my pickaxe I find same colored ores such as gold, dull copper, shadow etc. Once you find the spot you are ready to go, you can dig up same ore anytime.

It's the verite and valorite that get me. The veins are so far apart, I've found the only way to get a decent amount is sit there and wait for them to respawn. Thank god for multiple accounts! At least I can play another character while I'm waiting.

Yeah, good thinking. Except I've foolishly decided to give my smith/carpenter/tinker too many skills! Maybe I could role play by talking to myself while walking to coloured veins. Everyone knows miners are a little crazy!

What do the different types of ores grant on this server? (What's the difference between valorite and normal? etc...)
I can't turn up anything on Google that is era accurate.

The ores are only for color. There are no other effects

If the ores are only for color , doesnt that defeat the point of them existing ? Isnt it supposed to be, the higher the skill required to mine an ore, the higher the protection rating they provide for armour ?

This is era-accurate. When colored ore was introduced the only thing different about the armor made from it was the color. One other effect was that mining gained faster by mining the different colors instead of iron exclusively.
After T2A you could make colored weapons with the colored ore. At that time I believe the properties of the weapons and armor made from colored ore scaled up with the rarity of the color.

You could make the weapons with colored ore but it did NOTHING extra compared to iron, once the runic hammers were released you could make them, with extra power.
I was pretty sure in T2A that the different ores offered additional HP for the armor. ((Item HP not character!)) but they did not provide extra protection.

I think the correct term is "African American ingots". You guys are going to offend someone.
