"From the patch notes: It will no longer be possible to gate monsters. Only escorts, hirelings, pets, and summoned creatures. "
From the 9/16/98 mega-patch notes.
Seems like this is possible here and shouldn't be (unless I'm just seeing tmap spawn or something).

The only monsters that are gatable are those under player direction, either tamed, or via the enticement skill.

But, gating wild monsters using enticement is possible? I'm not sure that's right.

You can gate anything provoked...even without provocation. Try gating then cast magic arrow at something behind it.

NPC's should never walk through a gate by themselves period.
Only pets/hires in "follow mode" should go through a gate if I'm not mistaken.

Why do you think enticement is a skill? It was made for such purposes as to lure pets away or healers upon boats into places like the old lands etc. Many thought it was just for whimsy. It has a purpose, now you know for what.

I am not sure maybe it just works for tames. I never was able to entice an npc through a gate. But you could gate when a wyrm is set to follow you via the "kill" command

Fwerp, before that patch, you used to be able to gate monsters without entice, they would simply follow you through a gate if they attacked you. After that patch, they would only gate under player countrol, which is tamed, enticed, etc.

The thing is, I remember when the patch went in to effect, it was really becoming a problem (on Atlantic at least).
I simply don't remember seeing monsters gated to town after that point, period. I played on and off for a couple of years afterward, and it's just not something that happened. Maybe people had better things to do than entice ettins from Hythloth through gates to the Vesper bank, but I'm a little reluctant to believe that game mechanics allowed it and I just wasn't encountering it. The patch note's categorical wording also give me pause.
Do people really remember this happening after the '98 patch?

If the monsters were enticed to a city they would be whacked. Enticing backup creatures to later maybe provoke on an enemy of yours may have had some benefit.
Lets say some griefers dumped a bunch of snakes at roadkills and then looted the corpses. You could entice your dragons to wipe them out through the gate without ever having to step foot on Justice Island.

This was a serious problem tonight.
You could not bring non-tamed monsters through portals during t2a. you just could not. they had to be tamed.
Also there were server boundries in real UO, even if you could gate a monster through a portal, it would techically be gone, and respawn. here it will not and we had empty dungeons tonight. this will be greifed beyond belief and is not accurate.
Get rid of gating monsters!

"You could not bring non-tamed monsters through portals during t2a. you just could not. they had to be tamed." Lol... and since you didn't make a link to something like a patch note, I guess we are all suppose to go off of the fact that "you remember?" We should get rid of people who think that they remember exactly how things happened 10 years prior =/

Without source-code (revealing then-unknown loopholes, or lack thereof), I'm rather curious about your absolute certainty behind this.
I'm not trying to make a snide remark here; instead, I'm genuinely interested in your confidence level of this issue.

Fwerp's orininal post had the patch note.
"From the patch notes: It will no longer be possible to gate monsters. Only escorts, hirelings, pets, and summoned creatures. "
From the 9/16/98 mega-patch notes.

you can not gate monsters...unless you have direct control over them. Their AI wont allow it, but enticing is different they are charmed into doing it.Which makes sense they are following blindly.
And where is the link to the patch?
I tried throwing a gate in front of some ossys as a test they sidestepped it but enticing them I was able to do so.
Just be aware of the rules concerning this.
