Getting rid of runebooks

I just saw some thread in the general discussion where some fellar was crying about bandages and runebooks. Derrick seemed to want to get rid of runebooks, but was not sure of how to approach it given how many of them are and how much of a loss they would be for players. So here is my suggestion:
Temporarily set up special NPCs that will purchase runebooks for a set price (something around the cost of making one?). After a set period of time, these NPCs go away and runebooks are no longer usable except to remove runes from them (or maybe just delete them).
That is all.

Getting rid of runebooks would cause many to leave the shard...I think there is that kind of element in forums where they would do anything to ruin one shard to promote their own.

This would be the same as clearing castle courtyard runes, you would be taking away players personal property.

As I understand it, the last patch before 2000 is the cut off. This patch includes rune books. Therefore, there really is no harm in leaving them in. My only suggestion would be to make them stealable (via targeting) so that they do not provide a means of having a trammel/unstealable recall rune. Stealing a persons rune is a valid era tactic which is negated by runebooks being unstealable (as I understand it)

I saw leave them in. They are era accurate and the only thing Derrick is leaving out of that clump of patches is the Housing system and, although I have previously advocated for that partial system (Phase II of III) to be implemented, I understand why it is not.
So, We are just going to have to accept that everything in 1999, SAVE a half complete housing system, is going to be implemented on UOSA.
It's not that hard to understand is it?

Look what else is in that patch...
SKILL LOCKS...BANK WEIGHT LIMIT being removed (400 stone limit before), makers mark, co owners, potion kegs, runebooks, being able to see the age of a house.
Everything in that patch is in except phase 2 lockdown....
You cant really say say get rid of RBs and keep everything else above.
So which would you rather have?
A. None of the Above
B. Keep Runebooks and things as is.
It isnt a runebook arguement... Its a patch of 11-23-99 arguement. All or nothing is how i see it.
I really wish people would take some time to look and think about the requests they make (not you chum, just pizzed at the thread on the main page)

I say leave as is. We've already had this discussion. We just don't have phase II lockdowns. That's A-OK with me.

Personally i'd be happy with that and all the other stuff from the patch gone since that was the time i played on osi for (sept 97 to mid 99), but it's still fun as is.

You discovered my secret plan to destroy this shard and start a chum-shard!
Uh, anyways.
I don't know if runebooks are era accurate or not. If they are, certainly keep them. Derrick, in the other post, seemed to indicate a desire to remove them, so I merely suggested a way to do so that seemed least painful. That's all.

Looks like it doesn't matter what we say in the first place. Giving feedback is always pleasant though. On that note, if you're going for everything before 11/23, get rid of the other stuff too.

The idea, as I understand it, is that 11/23's patch IS the cut off. I.E. everything in 11/23 is to be included. The one exception to this was the housing changes and that is because it destroys a key aspect of T2A and was more of a UO:R update than anything.
Therefore, unless you can claim that runebooks are more of a UO:R thing (which I could easily see) and show how runebooks are destroying the T2A feel (this one seems stretching it), I see no reason not to leave them along with the other things from that patch note.
Again note: I just GMed my first mage in over a year. I don't even own or have a runebook.

A great method of getting rid of them. I appreciate the creativity.

removal of runebooks will change nothing, if its accurate do it
people will go back to the way they played before (not having personal rune librarys in their banks)
step 1: remove ability to craft runebooks
step 2: remove ability to use runebooks
step 3: special coloured garbage bins at banks
step 4: award points for turned in runebooks
step 5: allow people to chose from a list of shinny objects
step 6: after certain date delete all runebooks, or deactivate completely and leave them as paperweights
prizes: 1 runebook = roast pig
5 runebooks = bag of kindling
25 runebooks equals a one point trophy
50 runebooks = nightsight potion
etc
unclaimed points at end trade for gps
everyone will be compensated for their books or will have a bunch of paperweights
just like glacial staves were removed
people got to keep the pixels but they dont do anything anymore

Are these steps really needed? Awarding points will create an abusable system. Let's all start making runebooks now for points later on.
I think you if disable recall/gate from a runebook and also the possibility to drop runes on the runebook it will suffice.
If it's decided to get rid of runebooks I think it's just better to allow only thing : Drop Rune into Backpack. Those who have libraries can rearrenge their library this way and the runebooks become impossible to use. Only rare collectors will have them in the end, just like bank checks.
Maybe most runebooks will disappear when the next "clean up brit" is done.

If you remove runebooks you have to remove everything else from that list. You can't be selective.
Removing that patch is a great way to trim the servers population from 550 to 200. It'll cut down on the lag at least....
