Training melee skills

Any suggestions on how I can GM my melee skills without stabbing monsters all day long? Just beating up on another one of my characters isn't working as well as I'd hoped.

Hire a Ranger or Fighter from Jhelom,
Attack them with a fast, low damage weapon (smith hammer, dagger, skin knife)
Tell them to "all stop"
then heal them while they sit there and take the damage.

Once you GM your weapon skill (really fast), remove the hirelings weapon and keep hitting them to GM tactics.

FYI:
If you say "all guard me" first, they will turn grey and be legal to attack. Then you can say "all stop" (as mentioned above) to get them to quit attacking you. Followed by "all stay" so they don't wander off.

another good way is to go to an order guard tower on the roads between towns and just attack one and lure them out into the wilderness (or place a temp house by them if theres room and you have the gold). they heal themselves and can take some punishment, you just have to worry about healing yourself.

if you can get access to a house you can do this with a mage and gain resist as well if you can restrict his movement (including teleport). Make two healers before hand on two other accounts with 50 healing you could go 50 anatomy as well but its an easy skill to macro so you can choose another skill that's harder to raise to start besides and just macro anatomy until they are GM to begin. Both you and the mage(or whatever npc type you are using) will gain skill so after your done take him out on a hunt with you afterwards. This way you are killing a few birds with one stone.
You can also use pets if you want to start a tamer to raise vet and to raise skill on the pet besides raising on your main alone.
Keep in mind its good to keep an eye on everything to tell the follower to stop, or stop yourself even if things look like they may end in death.
I am just adding in a few options besides those already given, all of these work.
Alot of people will allow you to use a house they own as well, ask around.

This. Although you can just say all stay. Be sure to attack them between "all guard me" and "all stay" or they will turn blue again. Another option for macing is wands. Low damage and quite fast. Since you want to raise healing at the same time make a macro to bandage them (restock agents are your friend here). Be sure use anatomy on them during the healing pauses to raise that. I also snooped their pack several times in the loop to gain dex. Higher dex = faster hits = more chances to gain. So go for 100. You can always train it down later if you don't want that much.

How quick is this method?

you dont want them to be grey...you can have them attack yourself. If you turn them grey I will kill them to teach you a lesson and take all that gold you pumped into them away from you .

The "all guard me" turns them grey for only a second. Once you say "all stop" after you've attacked them they are once blue again to everyone else but you. So the order would be:

Say: All guard me
[attack hireling]
Say: All stop (will stop hitting you back)
Say: All follow me (to keep them from wandering off)

To answer the OP, this method works in about 3-5 hours from 30, though slightly longer for macing.

Maybe I am mistaken...but if you have them attack you being you directed the order it would be similar to casting on yourself correct? If I am wrong I am wrong it's been awhile since I did this in town.
Lack of sleep has been getting to me.

How long is a UO day? This method seems pretty expensive. Anyone tell me about how much it would cost to get from 30ish to GM?

I GMed all my melee skills by running around hitting monsters, because I'm hardcore.

a little over 12 hours got me gm swords, wrestling and tactics using a hired fighter.
it took over 1500 bandaids but i was healing my char who was attacking as well because he was ebolting himself.
somewhere around 3k gp is my guess for this method, and be sure to give cash to the fighter every so often so he doesnt attack you back because he is no longer under your command..

Hey guys, I've been trying to train fencing with this method but it's not working. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Basically the hired fighter doesn't stop attacking me when I say "all stop" or "all stay".

Here's what I'm doing:

-- Hired a Jhelom fighter
-- Either say "all kill" and target myself or "all guard" and attack the fighter
-- start fighting (i'm attacking fighter; fighter is attacking me)
-- Say "all stop" or "all stay"

But no dice. The fighter keeps attacking me and seems to mostly ignore my commands.

What am I doing wrong here? Is there a trick to getting this method to work?

Thanks!

Step back 1 tile and invis yourself. You can then beat on the fighter as long as you don't re-tab in

FYI if you hire an npc mage, it takes about 4 hours to GM on with 100 dex compared to the 12 hours grimey mentioned.
