just poking and prodding other's memories out there as I don't have any documentation but...
I don't remember a ship key being labeled "a ship's key" I thought this was indistinguishable from a house key, back in era.

I believe when you first placed the boat, your key would be drescribed as a boat key, but players could rename their keys to anything they wanted....thus making them indistinguishable. I used to rename my house key, "A boat key".....so when people would try to recall to it, and it didn't work, they would just throw the key away.
Back in those days, I had a keyring full of keys that had collected from killing players. Occasionally I would run around the country side and try to open house doors with it....it paid off a few times!!!
