Auctions and Private Bids?

Post by Karik Verlee »

Can someone explain to me the reasoning of private bids? I don't get it.

1.) You send a pm to someone with your offer in hopes they will accept it before others get the chance to bid up the item.

2.) It's a way for the seller to raise (bid up) the value of his/her own item.

3.) A mysterious +15-+20 power+ quarterstaff collector just placed a bid and wishes to remain annonymous.

Which do you think is more likely?

Or seller can lie, say he reveived a higher bid in order to entice higher bids from other parties. Create a black box and see who the last sucker at the table is.

Its two things I dont like when someone sell stuff. Thats private bidding and not putting an ending time. "Until I get a number that I like" is unacceptable. Just say you have the right to not sell the item.

I disallow private bids on anything im selling because its cheesy and fraudulent. Private buyouts are okay, however.

If you want anonymity for some f'tarded reason, you can pay the premium and buy the item at its buyout price. Otherwise you have to make your bid public. The only legitimate purpose private bidding serves is like Matron and others have said, allowing the seller to extort more money out of his clients.

Dumbest thing I ever did was make a sale on IRC because I was too lazy to make a thread. Sold a +25 vanq qstaff for 8k when they're worth more like 25-30. Grats to jimi.hendrix for the deal of the decade. Only +25 vanq I've looted since I started here!

Private bids are a good way to get a great deal -_-

That's not what this is about.

This is about public auctions on the forums, where the seller post's something like..

Yeah, I know, I kind've (to put it lightly) diverted from the OP. I'm really good at rambling when I'm bored at work.

I usually stop bidding when there are private bids, out of spite.
