Is Archery good here?

Post by klep »

I know this shard strives for Era Accuracy above balance, and before I go to the trouble of making an Archer I just want to check and see if Archery here is as good as it use to be during the Live t2a era.

I maybe wrong cause those early UO days are all but a blur but I remember archery def being a good combat skill with Prepatch bows being a highly sought after commodity. I pretty sure it was t2a era because I remember using UOextreme which was a pretty good hack alternative for UOA.

I dont remember what exactly made it so kickass I think it was a combination of being able to shoot arrows while running, and good damage, fast shooting sometimes double shots for no apparent reason.

I think this fell into t2a from this thought process.
-Great Lord noto pks....
-Noto Patch (introd the tiered fame/karma systems) only 4th tier or higher could do be in Order/Chaos Pre-t2a
-Then when t2a dropped anyone could be in Order/Chaos and I remember the majority of characters including myself running with Archers in most of the Awesome fights that followed. Then at some point I think they killed Archery in the sake of balance?

So is archery anything like this here?

Archery is ultra slow but powerful. I suggest it for a secondary weapon skill, or on a stealther.

Hide 90 / or GM with stealth
Archery
Any melee weapon / or 90 stealth
Tactics
Anatomy
Healing 90
Magery 30
Resist 90

Might be a good temp

Tank-Archery Mages are not that good here.. 25 dex = 15 second heavy fire rate and i believe 7 sec bow fire rate.

I have a couple gm archers... They are fun in groups (especially with stealth) but for solo i think you would be seeing a lot of OOOoooOOOOooooOs.

it shouldnt be slow with a normal bow. I remember it slower with cross and heavy. I was going to train it myself but dont want regular bow to be too slow.

I believe you can shoot, disarm your bow, wait a little over 2 seconds for your wrestling swing timer to finish, then arm your bow and you will be able to shoot again.

The timer for archery cools down at all times unlike the melee timer Mikel. This means you cannot cycle a weapon with archery like you can with melee weapons as you described.

The OP is thinking of the original UO from what I remember.

I didn't play T2A. I do know however that the run and shoot thing was pre T2A. Before T2A, archery was a great addition to any template.

Archery was the best during the early t2a and definitely the pre-t2a eras. Weapons hit at the end of their swing making it a viable tactic to dodge them. Archery on the hand could not be dodged making it the best choice of weapon especially since the timer elapsed while moving around. This alone made archery the most dominant weapon skill during these time periods.

One interesting thing recently found is that archery may not have required a full 2.0 second wait to fire after moving, but that it may have instead required 2/3 of your swing speed wait. Which might be longer for a heavy x-bow with 25 dex, but would be faster for most other configurations.

Still looking into this. I'm pretty hesitant to tinker with swings as you can imagine.

The only thing making archery even a little useful solo or in small groups is your insta hit heavy shot from the massive damage you can do.

Im not sure how to read Derrick's post and I agree that any changes to archery that improves the weapon skill would be awesome, but if it means losing your insta hit heavy, then archery is basically dead (in reality here). Again, Derrick's post wasnt real clear to me, maybe it is talking more about additional shots after opening up.

I don't really understand it either, but it sounds like he is talking about the way the timer elapses that would ultimately shorten it to a degree.
