Fun UO from the past!

Post by Zane »

I was thinking of some of the things about UO that have been changed over time. Some things were glitches, some unintended outcomes/side effects. Some were just replaced with a different system. Most of mine were from very early days.

Things like:

Mining from inside a house.
Casting with full plate.
Guards not insta-killing players/mobs, even multiple guards spawning for tougher targets.
Dread Lords.

Aside from the things that changed the face of the game (not looking for a bunch of people saying UO before Trammel), what are the little oddities and such that you remember about UO.

A guard showing up for every person you attack. People would cast EQ, and an entire army of guards would show up.

Many people forget about how it was before the rep patch...

Before i knew the ins and outs of the game someone was stealing inggots from my miner. So i snooped him to try and get them back and in the process my character dropped to dishonerable (or whatever it was) and was then grey to all. I was killed probably 50 times for no other reason than being grey for the next couple of days.

I ended up running around for hours giving gold to beggers to get blue again...

This char also has the following skills (most at journeymen level)

Mining
Smithing
Magery
Resist
Swords
Tacts
Archery
Hiding
Wrestling
Camping

Have to love being new to a mmorpg....

I didn't think the houses could get as close to the mountain as they did in the early days (before spacing restrictions took place).

And yeah Hoots... as a new player, the Rep system was a bit rough. Once you got the hang of it though... it made the evil/good dynamic a lot more interesting (and more fun!).

Couple things I liked the most aside from the house placement in town, next to homes and on top of towers.
My favorite scam was putting items in a bag then the trade window, then dying it and accepting the transaction and both items would return to my bag.

The other was my favorite part of the game was when corpses decayed instead of turning to bones and dissapearing they dropped in a bag on the ground leaving the loot behind.
I always hunted dungeons for that reason :)

Notoriety system was the best times in UO and the least thought out. You could become a Great Lord on a character with no skills simply by macroing "A Attack" on a 15 minute loop, 128 times. Pre-T2A & Pre-Fame/Karma UO was my favorite, I view T2A the same way many of you view UOR (aka, I dislike it, but I like the community and Staff here :) )

Pre-T2A and T2A are two very different eras but almost have the same outcome, compared to UO:R or AOS where the game really went away from its roots.

Both eras have their ups and downs, T2A pvp is much more balanced. I almost prefer notoriety system in a way, thieves would be red etc. and as Roadkill said, you could only gain one noto points per 15 minutes.

It's the simplest form of UO, all spells in town, no stat locks or skill locks (atrophy), hit/miss after the swing animation!
