I am terrible with boats, and could not figure out how to get on them from the island or the main land.

Double Click the Side of the Boat adjacent to the Mast (opens Plank)

Double Click Plank ... as the planks open you can cross from boat to boat,

It is Best NOT to run on the Planks, as they are Slippery, make sure you are in Walk Mode.
