Wrestling vs Parry - which mitigates the most damage?

Post by punk »

I'm trying to pick a 7th skill and wondered if anyone had any experience with wrestling vs parry as far as damage mitigated, more specifically in mitigating a tank's hally damage. Anyone know the hit % of a tank mage on a character with 100 wrestling? Or the average damage done by a tank mage with a hally onto a character with a GM heater shield and a leather suit?

Anyone have any opinions on spreading the damage out over a series of hits (parry) versus all the damage done in a single hit, but occurring less (wrestling).

Wrestling 50% chance to not get hit, 50% chance to hit someone else.

Parry 100% chance to get hit, 50% chance to reduce the damage of the hit, 0% chance to hit someone else.

Wrestling is considered a weapon skill, which means how often they hit you is dependent on this skill. GM vs GM gives a 50 percent hit rate.

If you had not your equipped weapon in hand (or hands for wrestling) which you are skilled but had parry, you would be hit 100 percent of the time but at a lesser value due to parry.

Having parry without a weapon skill would not be beneficial as your sheilds would be brutalized consistently, and you would be fodder to a GM weaponmaster.

Parry: Half of the hits against you do a reduced amount of damage

Wrestling: Half of the hits against you never happen :-)

either you are a dexer and have a weapon skill, or you are a mage and have wrestling + a weapon skill

your question really doesnt make sense.. its like asking should i have fishing or stealth?

Well I'm a bard and wanting a defensive skill to counter a tank mage. I had a thought that I could use magic reflect + a shield + monsters surrounding me to defend against 1-2 PK's, but I don't know if it is viable, or more effective than wrestling.

Anyone know the average damage parry mitigates? "Reduction in damage" is very vague.

What do people suggest as a purely defensive standpoint?

What kind of bard are you? Mage bard? Go wrestle. Warrior bard? Go Parry.

dude... or you could use a recall macro to just get away... you want wrestle. If you're a bard you aren't going to fight toe to toe with any tank mage or medi or pure red dexxer for that matter.... when you see a name you don't know, you want to recall. Your issue will be you trying to recall and a dexxer or tank interrupting you. Mitigate damage? No bard can fight a tank mage... and a warrior bard is a waste of time... better to cast EV's then "dex" the monster to death.... bard is for gold, recall when you see a red. Make a pure dexxer if you want to hide randomly in the dungeon so once you recall out your bard you can fight with... but trying to make a bard able to defend against one or 2 pks? It can't happen due to the skills a bard requires.

So the formula aint like this?

[Parry Skill] - ([Shield AR] * 1.33) = [%chance to parry]

Its the new school Parry formula: Parryskill\2 = chance to parry????

If a mage bard keep a couple daemons summoned all the time while you are out provoking if possible. Wrestling is a must.

I have killed PKs with my bard doing this.

Easier to control then EVs.

Great thanks for your "wisdom" on how exactly the game is played according to you. It was just a thought that I might provoke monsters around and walk into them for protection while using wrestle or a shield to mitigate the hally and a magic reflect to stop a dump. To me it's no fun if I'm just going to mash a recall macro the second I see someone...

Plus why can't a bard defend one or two PKs with it's skills? I'm just a pure mage + provoking and music... Instead of the necessary hally hit, I've got a dragon hit or firebreath...

Wrestling here is uber, I can't tell you how many times someone has failed to hit me with 100 wrestling while taking e-bolts to the dome in the process.

agreed.

100 wrestling vs 100 weaponskill does in no way shape or form = 50/50 hit rate

more reasonably you'll hit 1/4 the time, or 1/5 the time

dexers suck here in other than gank pking with magic DPed weps

the first equation doesn't make sense to me

say you have 100 parry skill and 10 AR shield

that means you have 100 - `13 = `87 percent chance to parry

now

100 parry skill and better 20 AR shield

that means you have 100 - `26.7 = ` 73.3 percent chance to parry

meaning the better the shield the less you parry successfully?

Right. Thats the "UO:R" Formula.... I just know that it was standard during the early years of UO:R.

The formula IS correct. Bigger shields, with higher AR absorb more damage, but block less. The lower AR shields absorb less, but block more often.

I have no idea how it works here.

I did some testing on test and it seemed to me that a buckler blocked a LOT more than a heater, but I coulda just had a streaky RGN...
