Transfering pets

So I have a tamer, and I want to transfer a nightmare or a frenzied ostard to another character within that account.

Anyone have a suggestion on how to accomplish this?

I've tried transferring them to an alt on a different account, but he is not able to transfer it back to someone on the original account.

Do I need to make a 50/50 Taming/Lore newb char to accomplish this?

I think because you don't have the taming required you can't issue commands such as transfer to a pet. You can release it I believe and retame though if you want to transfer, of course that won't help if both are on the same account. All I can say is try it.
