A couple of questions...

Post by Dreakon »

Hi! I'm new. I used to play UO back in the day and after trying a couple of free shards, I'm interested in something that feels like more of an accomplishment. On the other shard I really spent time on, it seems like everyone on it had multiple 7x GM characters, 15 houses and more gold than they know what to do with... probably because the rate of building skills was increased drastically. This leads to people getting bored and actually makes it a little hard to get new players into the game because everyone is already eons ahead of them.

1. Are the rates the same as in Ultima Online back in the day? I think it's kind of fun to run around in a world where many players aren't perfectly crafted and 7x GM in a few days, and where having a house and a boat and a lot of gold is actually an accomplishment. Do you find this around this server?

2. Even back then I had a horrible time figuring out how to make gold and find regs and get started. I have a good idea how to build the skills I want, it's just getting the resources to support it lol. Are there any good guides out there for starting out financially and stuff? Or any tips you guys can give?

3. Is a Tamer/Mage a good build? I'm thinking:
Animal Taming
Animal Lore
Veterinary
Magery
Meditiation
Resisting Spells
Evaluating Intelligence

What do you think?

4. I've seen private servers for MMORPG's come and go. This one already has a nicely sized population and I guess it's been around two years. I'm just curious if this shard is around for the long haul? Is it financed entirely through donations or are the people in charge going to keep this project going no matter what? I just love the idea of truly old school UO and wouldn't want to see this going anywhere, especially if I get a small fortune built up in-game at any point. ;)

Thanks for the help guys! :)

1. I think while there are a lot of veterans with 7x characters, we still have a lot of incoming new players that create a nice balance. Here is the myt2a page on skills: http://my.uosecondage.com/Status/Skills. UOSA is supposed to be as accurate as possible and this makes it naturally challenging to gather gold and purchase a house. Try it out and you can decide for yourself :)

2. This is the guide forum : http://forum.uosecondage.com/viewforum.php?f=9
This is our wiki: http://wiki.uosecondage.com/?title=Main_Page

Both these resources contain very valuable information for new players to get started, have a look around.

4. UOSA is here for the long run, we have no intention of slowing down any time soon :)

Welcome Dreakon, hope you enjoy yourself!

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad to see players and staff respond pretty quickly! :)

I really don't know much about old school UO, despite having played it back when my computer had a whopping 133Mhz processor and dialup. I know Magery is supposed to be the "be-all end-all" of skills, due to the difficulty of building the skill and the massive amounts of supplies/regs needed (meaning you need to have a lot of gold or at least a steady supply of it coming in).

However, how do melee characters fare on this server? If I had a build like...
Animal Taming
Animal Lore
Veterinary
Swordsmanship
Tactics
Healing
Resisting Spells

Would I be able to survive like this? I've always preferred melee to magery, personally, in just about every game I play. And I would think having pets with me could make it even better. Thoughts?

Thanks again! :)

P.S: Does this shard have "bonding" of pets? Where if you have them for over a week and keep them happy, they'll bond to you and the ghost will follow you after they die so people with GM Veterinary skill can resurrect them? Plus, bonded pets will follow you when you recall places (don't have to make gates for them). I don't remember if that was in the T2A era.

Hi there :-)

I am new here aswell with the same idea liike you. A Tamer :-)
I played UO too back in the days but i guess I am not as up2date as the pro's that are on this server for a longer time.
What I would imagine is, that without magery you will have a difficult time in handling pets and travel fast/safely, i.e. no gates/recall.
Sure you can use scrolls, but that would need a lil magery skill too.
From my point of view, I would recommend sticking to magery

My current development led me to the conclusion, that before you have GM Taming (if ever hehe) and all those magery skills up to the max, going for melee skills ain't too bad, so you can be more active hunting monsters and such.

Regarding taming:
I really hope the rumors of that "anti-new-tamer-chars-campaign" is actually only a rumor and not a fact.

Feel free to PM me about anything Dreakon, maybe stuff gets sorted out quicker that way :-)

This is my build as well. I like it the best, personally, because resist is quite helpful if you get accidentally targeted by a monster. But, it is expensive to GM.

You can also drop resist and use Hiding instead. GuardianKnight is a pain in the balls to kill because that's what he uses.

Realistically, you can GM hiding almost immediately (macro it overnight). You'll probably be around 85 magery, 85 vet, 95 taming, 50 resist at some point, which leaves 85 points in hiding, while you raise those skills to GM.

gm hiding i dunno takes a little longer than that... after 95 it slows down.. Hiding is useless in this case because of invis items. Some chars thrive on hiding, this template wouldnt be one....

the template i posted just is the best for tamers.. i mean thats the reality of it :/

I haven't looked at skills expense wise in a while. I can see where it would be expensive, but not really. couple K of regs and bandies

You could always make an alternate character to Gate.

Party and Guild Chat act like system messages if you run a macro that responds to a key stoke like "?" when you put a "?" your alt will respond by casting gate if you do the macro correctly as long as your two characters are partied/ guilded to one another. You could do this hunting in an area where you move little. That said a Dexxer Tamer is a good idea in my opinion.

Otherwise it gives you incentive to work with others who could gate for you. Who'd pass up farming with dragons?

Of course macing might be a good choice as dwindling one's stamina when you got them in the corner where they must pass through your pets would be nice.

One thing however...EV's would be a problem. If you could only work Magery in somehow to dispel...

Plus you have healing without anatomy and without magery/meditation healing by itself won't cut it.

Lore
vet 80
tame
anatomy- 80(besides healing anatomy of 80 with 100 str alone would give a bonus to base damage of +36%)
healing -(without fail 80 anatomy and 100 healing would heal 39-76 damage each bandage)
resist 90
Tactics 50- (for base damage no bonus or penalty-max bonus for GM tactics/100 str alone =+70 % without any tactics you'd do only 90% or -10% of base damage with GM anatomy and 100 str)
Macing...

Probably the only dexxer temp that would work, using your mace weapon from keeping them from being at full stamina and weakening armor so to make the best of your pets melee. I'd advise you seek out friends though. You could go swords for heavy hits but your pets are stronger and faster. Personal preference I suppose.
The reason anatomy is higher then tactics is to aide in healing yourself. On the plus side you could wear heavy armor without restraining your temp too much if at all.

tame
lore
vet
mage
resist
wrest
resist

- one resist
+ one med

my bad-

as a person with multiple chars that support each other in accomplishing things, i still say this is the best for tamers.
