I really don't have a problem if they limited everyone to 2 accounts but when I started here and found out you could have 3 I thought that was overkill. I agree it is to easy for people to run scripts for resources and to have their own 7x crafter. I think if they would at least lower it to 2 accounts it would make a big difference, I would be OK with one also. When I started here I made sure I put my crafter and my main character on the same account just incase there was ever a policy change on number of accounts.

Eventhough I am against multi-clienting as a whole, and still think it creates an overcrowded map, I think single logged accounts per IP is a sufficiently good compromise, and a relatively simple solution which would much improve the social interaction.

That way, skill gain would really have a merit, and quality crafted items, uniques and such would really be special to own. Right now gold is so easy to come by that uniques and magical weaps/armour are a comodity.

Always wondered what blacksmithing and alchemy was like, what kind of dedication it took to mine all that ore, so I did both.
The thing about this though is you see how hard it was to make a tamer on the real deal? you still dont have any idea what type of dedication a blacksmith or alchemist really took back in the day. Not saying I do.. Just making a point on the comparison of skill gain between here and there. multi-clienting makes this 3X as bad. It makes me sad to see how quickly you can GM skills here since you can effectively macro them while playing simultaneously... mostly the coveted skills like taming, blacksmith, alchemy, etc. It's almost like "who cares if you got a GM smith? so does 50% of the shard"
So true, it is ridiculous that I've been only playing a couple of weeks and already have a GM miner with over 60 bsmith who's about to buy his own house...without afk macroing!!!! It took me YEARS in OSI to get my miner to 95 and my BS to 80, never got them all the way, eventhough I played at least two more hours a day, but again, as someone said, faster skill gain improves the chances of keeping new players.

I'm really glad for the response this thread is getting. There is a LOT more consensus than I thought there would be.

Seriously, if Derrick limited it to 1 active login at a time this server would improve dramatically. I sincerely hope this thread isn't just brushed aside. I relish the opportunity to make this shard my permanent UO home, and I am absolutely certain that the end result would be a tighter knit community with a more enjoyable experience all around.

While I agree with nearly everything you said, and I am 100% against people being logged in numerous accounts at one time, I think it's idiotic and takes so much away from the T2A feel and experience, I still reference my first post when I say that this will severely damage the population of the shard.
There are far too many people here who aren't able to function or will not play without being able to run multiple accounts

See I disagree.

Judging by the response to this thread thus far, I see few (actually, not any) individuals saying they would outright quit if such a policy was enforced.

Furthermore, their "hard work" would not be put to waste - they would still have all of the wealth and skills on their other accounts, permitting them to utilize whatever they wish so long as another character isn't logged in.

Finally, I submit that the handful of individuals this shard would lose due to being unable to multi-client are individuals that this shard could do without. Ghost campers, archer turreters, various scripters, the kind of guy who dies and sends in two of his other characters to kill people, AFK gatherers... basically, the type of person that abuses the multi-client mechanic and cannot survive without. If you can't function without multiple clients, what good are you to the community as a whole?

Unfortunately it's not just a handful that would though. I've played here for about a month and a half and have seen first hand how many people rely on the ability to run multiple accounts. Look at the number of clients logged in at any given time, and compare it with the number of unique IP's. When we had like 750 clients online a little over a week ago, it was from barely 400 IP's. That's nearly 2 accounts for every IP.
I'm sorry because like I said, I want this just as bad, if not worse than you do - but you gotta understand while this would definitely make the shard much more fun, it would severely hurt the population.

If you can't function without multiple clients, what good are you to the community as a whole?
100% agreed. However, when many of the multi clienters rage quit, and the server numbers drop, it's going to be a LOT less appealing to someone, new or existing player, to log in seeing ~200ish people online as opposed to 600.

Naw most people who play don't read on or post on forums, I think these guys are 100% correct, like it or not there is a large group of people that would just leave the shard once you took away their ability to power through everything.

Alot of builds are what they are based on the premise that you might have other characters working in tandem. Not saying I like it but I would be surprised if Dereck was ever willing to risk a chunk of his playerbase...and playerbase is i'm sure the reason that multi-clienting was ever allowed in the first place.
If you can't function without multiple clients, what good are you to the community as a whole?
Hard to answer this, I think you are making the mistake of thinking that most other gamers want the kind of immersive experience you do. Most peple just wanna "win" basically, and in UO a big part of that is having resources and characters to obtain them quickly.

Gamers in general, UO or otherwise, are well known for exploiting every possible advantage to win/dominate/ or do whatever it is they set out to do. Especially these days, most gamers are concerned with instant gratification. Personally I really don't like that, but I think that attitude is now the prevalent way of thinking for the vast majority of gamers, including the people who play here.

Why do you think they have tournaments and such? That is the mentality of most MMO players nowadays, and it seems to include UO freeshard players. If Dereck wants to be able to keep people from going back to WoW etc., this is how he's gonna do it, by offering the UO equivalent, the ability to create characters quickly, and tournament environments that are friendly to that kind of player.

I am a newb myself, and I could be totally off base here, but I have noticed that the "spirit" of era accuracy (not the mechanics mind you) here takes a back seat to doing things that will keep power gamers playing, like multiclienting and tournaments.

I agree completely with the spirit of how you feel..but I think that it couldn't happen here without disastrous consequences, and further I have to say unfortuantely people who think this way and want to actually play rather than be handed everything are a minority in the gaming world these days.

It's because they have already spoken up in other threads as this has been brought up in numerous threads before....

I believe totally otherwise, I think one of the reasons why UOSA is so popular is because of multiclienting. The ones that don't are falling off the map.

I think I have a good idea:
Maybe we could see if Derrick would be able to put up an in game poll for a week, upon login..regarding this issue?

IMO this is the best bet to gauge the overall player opinion..Like Ira said, a lot of people don't post on forums, who play here.

(Now do we limit it to 1 vote per account or IP? )

sounds like a good idea.. but can you force a vote from someone as they log in is the question..

You dont play here you dont get a say hj...
People who really like UO want to make the most of it and delve deep into character creation and experimentation to further enhance the exploration of this world.
If its because you have a lousy connection or outdated comp...I am sorry.

Now as much I don't think multiclienting will ever go away, I take issue with the above.

It isn't creativity or deep character creation if someone like me (no previous UO experience, messed around on divinity for literally a week, never played OSI at all) can figure it out and start playing this way fairly quickly with multiple accounts etc. Granted I had help...but anyone with nice people to get advice from and access to the forums and wiki can do it, there is nothing special about it at all, and I don't see how it really makes people's playtime any more interesting having a bunch of characters constantly macroing.

I can't even figure out what I want to play because there is nothing forcing me to stick with a character, I can just go through and keep making infinite characters, and maybe my entire playtime on UOSA will be that - nothing but creating characters. You have to admit that a huge amount of people's playtime is spent doing just that rather than interacting in the world.

What it actually is is a hardmode game being played with an easy stick.

Macroingstuff afk doesn't enhance anyone's experience of anyhting other than the ability to solo sail through the game just the way you can in a modern MMO.

Call multiclienting what it is, don't pretend it's some evolved form of gaming, it's UO on speed for the ADD gamer of today lol, not some work of art.

Well if you want to hold down use last skill until your fingers go numb to GM hiding go right ahead. You have the freedom to do so.
Dont give this "I played here for a month for the first time and quit because of multi clienting...I never played UO except a week on some other server" act because that BS aint gonna cut it.
