Combat Strategy: how to fight high-end monsters?

Post by Fireangel »

I start as a fighter, but even I GM all related skills, I still need to do hit-and-run tactics to fight ogre lord and it takes me 5 mins to kill it. I just use a regular helbard and hit it once, run away and heal, and loop for like 5 mins... It takes so much time just for an ogre lord, what about the high-end monsters like balron and ancient wyrm?

I know mages or tamers are better to deal with those melee monsters, but is that any way for a fighter to kill them as well?

And, is parrying important as a fighter? I want to do burst damage to mobs but it seems I took the huge dmg all the time... I wanna know is it necessary in the combat?

many questions.. please help and many thanks!

parrying will give you a chance to block the blow. and since ogre lord is all melee damage, that could help.

about ogre lords... i mean they DO have a lot of HP. what can ya do? even using blade spirits takes a long time for them. I suggest maybe finding a different monster to fight, like spell-casters such as lich lords. Use silver weapon. I think for warriors it's best to stay way from high hp/damage melee based monsters.

You can fight anything, toe-to-toe.

Obviously, high-end magic armor is important. In my opinion, the dex loss from plate armor is probably worth the tradeoff for the extra AR. You can even mix and match - plate gorget and chest, ring arms, chain legs, etc. Armor of Fortification should be fairly cheap; Invulnerability is quite expensive, for ring and chain. But actually, invulnerable plate is quite cheap here too. That actually may be your best bet.

Ogre Lords don't cast, which is nice, but I *think* they wield their clubs here, which means they'll drain your stamina and damage your armor very quickly. So for that reason, I'd avoid them. A better choice might be cyclops and titans in the second age lands (though the PK threat is high).

And you're going to need some potions, specifically yellow and red potions.

Parry is fine against monsters where you don't need to use potions too often. Poison monsters are out of the question, since you need to disarm your shield to drink an orange potion (else you'll waste an entire bandage and 15 seconds curing it). I think it's a valid skill choice for PvM though. And it's easy to GM - just get a bunch of sheep or rabbits or cats (you can buy them at the stablemaster) and have them attack you. Have 10 shields in your pack, and make a macro that unequips the shield by type, then equips by type, every 60 seconds or so. That way, when the rabbits inevitably break your shield, you'll put another one on quickly and continue to build parry. Obviously you'll also need someone healing your character as well. And it helps to be wearing full plate (store bought) to ensure the rabbits only hit for 1HP at the most.

Any weapon will work against monsters. Here is the list of weapons in order of what does the most damage against a high-end monster (AR 30 or so) if it were GM-made. You can find things like +10 power weapons of any weapon type pretty cheaply though.

Spear (2-H)
Short Spear (2-H)
Quarterstaff (2-H)
Halberd(2-H)
War Fork
Double Axe (2-H)
Black Staff (2-H)
War Hammer (2-H)
Executioner's Axe (2-H)
Axe (2-H)
Two-handed Axe (2-H)
Large Battle Axe (2-H)
Battle Axe (2-H)
Bardiche (2-H)
Cutlass
Broad Sword
War Axe
Kryss
Gnarled Staff (2-H)
Scimitar
Longsword
War Mace *
Katana
Viking Sword
Maul
Mace *
Hammer Pick
Bow (2-H)
Club
Crossbow (2-H)
Crossbow, Heavy (2-H)
Pitchfork
Hatchet
Dagger
Butcher Knife
Pickaxe
Shepherd's Crook (2-H)
Cleaver
Skinning Knife

Looks like the War Fork is pretty awesome, and you can wield it with a shield. +10 vanqs and up are pretty pricey, but plain old power war forks should be pretty cheap.
