Should racial/sexual remarks be tolerated?

I'm all for seeing less disrespectuful, racist and downright ignorant attiudes on this server. I'd also heartily welcome the server-side censorship of certain overused racial epithets and lewd sexual discourse in public areas in-game. There does seem to be a very vocal minority that seems to think that every forum/game on the internet is another 4chan and think that the extreme freedoms of speech that exist there apply everywhere. They don't.

Platypus does have a point however, we are mostly adults and we cannot avoid being exposed to such words wether in real life or on the net. However that does not mean we should openly condone it by doing nothing. I can see alot of people here don't want to have to see it on a game they use to relax and escape the real world. And as there are mechanisms available to curtail this I see no reason why they shouldn't be put in place.

Joshua: Think before you reply to simple criticism. While you start some very worthwhile threads (such as this one) I find it hard to back your ideas when your reaction to any kind of opposing viewpoints is to immediately lash out or respond aggressively. It weakens your point in the discussion and makes it harder for people to agree with you, even when you are making a very good point. If you have respected Platypus then you should continue to do so and not brand him "shady" just because he doesn't agree with you entirely on this issue. That's just the nature of debate.

The reasons I "brand" Platypus shady is something you know nothing about and is ultimately none of your business. Maybe you should stop assuming everything to try and add to your very intelligent post.

However, I do think that censorship is bs, but I don't run the server and in order to keep everyone happy, I suppose it may be needed. There's also the issue of professionalism, a major company such as blizzard or sony would never allow "offensive language" for example.

Either way, I'm surprised that there are so many leftist complainers on this server such as joshualee. Liberals who want to censor everything that they don't like to hear annoy the shit out of me. JoshuaLee you have to be the most sensitive person I have ever met if people online offend you with their big bad words. Maybe you should try out Disney's Toontown online. http://toontown.go.com/ They ban for any use of vulgarity and have spam filters that block most words. If this fails you could always try a single player game so that people can't pick on you.

There's a small pecentage of the player community who:

-Use racist/sexual remarks.
-Contribute NOTHING constructive or helpful to the forums, instead posting insulting the above mentioned remarks.
-Play the game with the sole-purpose of making other players miserable and/or griefing them til they quit.
-Enjoy and pursue these activities regularly and take pride in it.

This is an example of players who should be banned. NOT TOLERATED. They are counter-productive to shard/community growth.

This may be the internet, complete with influences that certain groups of people find humourous, like 4chan, lolcats, roflcopter and all that; which is quite frankly immature material (and sure some of it is funny because of its immaturity). But it's still a medium for people to communicate live with other people.

It wouldn't be tolerated in the street, so why tolerate it on the web? Almost every game, website, forum on the internet does not tolerate racial or sexist slurrs - By tolerating it here you provide an outlet for people who can't spout their 'funny stuff' anywhere else on the web (I appreciate people running around screaming 'NI**A PLEASE' probably aren't racist, but just find it funny), and ultimately bring down the quality of the playerbase and thus the shard for the individuals who just want to play the game without listening to this kind of bile.

First off I agree that this behavior is crap and should not be tolerated .. This being said I wanted to ask would happen on the "streets" as you put it .. you walk by a black man spouting the N word.. are you going to be arrested ... NO ... will you run the risk of being punched in the mouth .. YES .. IMHO stop asking for laws .. UO is one of the few game you are so free to take action yourself in .. Take it personal get angry over it.. that is after all what stopped or changed/ curved slavery, the holocaust etc..

We did not just simple pray to the god/ gods, explain how it was wrong and how they should do something about it... WE DID something about it .. Just as we are free to do in UO.. spend your time finding their houses, were they hunt were their runes are marked, vendor locations etc... to grief the crap out of these people .. don't forget to share your info so others can grief them while your away and they are online..
