Player/Community Events - What can I/WE do?

Post by Layt »

As a quick backstory, I (re)joined this server in the fall of last year, and have been (imo) an incredibly active player (read: addiction), logging at least... 60+ hours a week? :-O. Since my return, with the exception of Blackfoot's dungeon crawls, I can recall ONE single event, when chumbucket was offering a stack of gold for the return of a lute. The event lasted an hour or so. When I go check out deserted player towns, and the UOH museum, I think 'wow, how did I miss all this?'. While I'm sure there were some extraordinary, dedicated players when the server opened, I find it hard to believe that with an incredible, still growing population, this server lacks the initiative and creativity to do some really cool stuff.

So I asked myself, what can _I_ do? And I couldn't come up with much, so I wanted to open this discussion the community, and to our greater powers. What can WE do to liven up the community, and keep things 'active'? And, what, if anything, can we ask/expect from the higher powers to support us in such an initiative?

Check the player run events forums as often as you can to keep better informed of when events are taking place.
You could also get abunch of good ideas in there probably reading the past event threads.
Advertising is deffinately one of the hardest parts of running an event as a play.

Lots of events have happened, just very few people to stand up and say "I'll be the one to lead it!"

Lots of people that would donate for rewards.

Staff will definitely help. "Help" though. Most of the work is still on the backs of the players, where it should be.

----------------------------------------------

So it really comes down to players stepping up to be the leader:

1) Find an activity people might be interested in. I would ask around to see if there is interest before doing something (Or see if something similar has happened before). Experienced players can also share with you any problems you might have and suggestions to make it a solid event.

2) Make a well-formatted post 1-2 weeks in advance to get the advertising started. Become active in #secondage in mIRC and advertise during prime times to help. Finally, see if any staff members will be around to globally announce your event at its designated time (Line this up ahead of time).

3) Ask the community for donations, or use your own cash, or an event with an entrance fee.

4) Find a location to hold it. Many players would volunteer the use of their already fully furnished large buildings. This helps take a load of work off your shoulders.

5) Overplan, overorganize. Have everything ready 1 hour before so you can meet and greet people with ease 10-15 minutes before the event. Not to mention any last minute things that pop up.

6) Screenshots, Screenshots. Advertisements for the next event start with, "What happened last time?"
