I survived being PK'd!; A Thread for PVM'rs

Post by Kordavox »

Not to spit on reds of the shard (they provide an element of danger that I feel prevents boredom for a pvm farmer like myself), but I always feel proud when I manage to flee like a terrified rat from a PK'r. Doesn't sound like a big accomplishment, fighting back would be way cooler, but being able to escape from a person who's intent is to kill you before you escape/prevent your escape is a fun rush.
I've read a few threads lately from people who complain about PK's, and I think it would be a good idea to reveal that it is possible to flee and I've heard it's possible to fight back, although I've never done so successfully ;).

I'd like to hear your stories, PVM'rs! I will start:

I was at Fire Temple on my provoker. I usually drop in every half hour or so when it has respawned its usual daemon, 2 drakes, 2 fire eles and 1 dragon. I had finished off all but the dragon and 1 fire elemental, both approximately at half health, and was summoning an EV while changing the show on my 2nd screen when I saw an incoming name in red! I was confused for a moment; was I at an evil mage spawn?! NO! I was at Fire Temple, and a red name can only mean one thing: Death! Deacon swoops in, tossed an ebolt, and brings out the hally! The dragon had just managed to kill the fire ele, so I had a few moments to ponder my fate. Thankfully, I had prepared for this occasion! My spell reflect threw back the ebolt, but the hally hit took half my life, even though I had protection cast on myself! (10 AR; woefully insufficient!) I go for my emergency recall button (casts the spell, targets my rune to Moonglow) and the first one fails. My concentration strained, I hit it again and POOF return safely to Moonglow with my fortunes intact!
I can only think; had I been in the middle of casting a Blade Spirits instead of an EV (which fizzled, btw) I would have died.

Personally, I'd like to hear the story of an avid PVM'r that fought back, and maybe even won! Feel free to share your "I survived being PK'd!" story!

I always have a wand of Item Identification on my farmers. I set a macro for Arm/Disarm (a macro in the UO client itself, NOT in Razor), so for me it was ALT+D or something like that. And before I go out hunting, I arm the wand manually, then ALT+D to disarm it and have the client remember it as the arm/disarm item for the future.

Then, if I'm ever casting Blade Spirit and see trouble (whether it be a PK or a fast-approaching silver serpent or Balron), I can just hit ALT+D to arm the wand and break the spell paralysis (of course, I need to disarm it quickly because I have 0 macing and 100 wrestling).

Of course, Blade Spirit is so awful on this shard, it's hardly ever an issue with an experienced character. But this is a good trick to know.

You can also pop a trapped pouch; I used to carry 3 pouches on my farmers, so I could pop one to break the spell and still have two remaining in case I got paralyzed as I ran away or fought.

is this true for any equipped item, or does it have to be something w/charges?

When I used to farm on my bard, I would use provocation, target the two mobs, then cast recall and hover the cursor over my rune.

When one of the mobs died, I'd quickly hit ESC to kill recall, throw an ebolt to finish the mob, then quickly run over, double-click both corpses, then cast recall. I'd then loot both corpses while holding SHIFT; you can drag and drop items with the target cursor up without actually targeting them, keeping your recall precast and ready to go as soon as you need it.

Soon as you see a PK, you just click your rune and you're gone. Once I figured that out, I was never PKed again on my bard.

I had "r-" chase me from Covetous to Minoc making these ridic 40+ hp whacks every 5 secs (supreme acc vanq no doubt). I was pinging absolutely horrible and just running along spamming mini heal the whole way on my 50 resist mage.

At one point he said something like "LOL YOU JUST HEALED TO 100 WITH MINI HEAL YOU NUB"

I mean, c'mon, what was the other option? Cast gheal and get harm spammed to death? That would've made me more of a nub. I survived the encounter.

Most mouse`s have side buttons. Make a macro to recall of your recall rune and bind it to the side button.

Very quick and easy way to escape. Just hit the button the second you see red names.

haha okay scenarios are always like this for me:

a) pk cast para: trapped pouch macro and run. they are busy casting another spell so they are off screen already lol

b) 2 or more pks try to dump spells on me. this is scariest. but just run run run while chugging pots and self-heal. eventually 14-15 seconds passes and you have full life again, granted you have GM healing.

My main has no recall/magery but I always manage to run away. I have GM hiding so it's easy to lose them. Been thinking of setting up a gater on my laptop, that opens gate at the tap of spacebar. It will come in very handy I think =)

Just a tip.. paralyze will not interrupt your spells and will also not work at all if targetted while you are in spell casting duration. Any PK casting paralyze = guaranteed escape by recall

I went about 2 weeks without dying and then got pked twice in the space of about half an hour last night. First by 3xACE, who were ghosting the Covetous spawn (I swear im going to start sending a ghost in to check for ghosts)

Then by 3xSOA in the mage tower while I was toe-to-toeing 2 mage lords. I ran for it and managed to get recall up.. but then couldn't find my goddam rune. *dead*

Being a PK isnt always about profit, we keep the inflation of gold down for the good of the shard.

If you recall of your farming spot, we still win.

Ha, I got PKd for the first time last night. That was one minute after I recalled out to bank my gold, and recalled back to start the cycle again.

I miss my disarm thief, dexers were his little toys.

I actually think it's a great thing. On trammel shards, gold has no value and 100k is like nothing. Thank god for PKs keeping inflation down.

Yeah, after UO:R gold and resource gathering became trivial.

100k is like nothing here too, what is the difference? Especially when people get paid to pvp, like they do here.

Indeed, it's also about naming your char FetuSpOoPMonkey, rez killing, calling everyone newb, and spending alot of time arguing on #secondage and these forums.

I'm joking of course, I know pk's (and just full loot, ability to attack anyone in general) are an integral part of the game and keep things exciting...but the balance here does seem tilted to me.

I love the shard, but I can totally understand how new people get frustrated...
