He's brand new, gonna take some time to figure everything out..what would you expect given that hasn't touched the game in ten years or whatever?

Worse thing would actually be if all he runs into is asshats who give flip him shit for being new, and not enough folks to give him a small helping hand on the shard..whatever his playstyle ends up being.

I would expect he'd have some memory of what it was like and not get freaked out over a couple of scrolls. Nobody who played more than a few HOURS would even think to post something about creating a new character just to recover a couple of scrolls. It's preposterous. In fact it makes me doubt the legitimacy of the original post.

And if he's truly upset about a couple of scrolls, what will happen when his ass is PK'd all the live long day? Better to leave now and go play Candyland with his baby sister.

Harsh .... but IMO true.

What a bunch of BS assumption, maybe he played very little ten years ago..who knows..man I wish people didn't act like you to new people. How the hell do you know what his playstyle is gonna be?

I never played OSI at all, and hardly any freeshard experience before here, i'm glad there were a few people out there to show me the ropes without screaming LOLNOOBCANDYLANDTRAMMEL, why people like you insist on acting like this to newbs I will never know.

this kind of attitude is exactly the kind of reason that IRC is full of 90% useless crap talk and you get 9 snarky snide answers to a question for every good one.

If he can't handle PKing he will probably leave and go to Demise or something, as i'm sure many do.. but he should at least get the opportunity to try it out without catching all kinds of crap IMO.

Props to the people in the thread giving advice.

When I started here I didnt need much help(but I've played a ton of UO). I think the first character you should start should be a mule or a fighter and know its going to be along time til you can be good in the game. And macro herding to get that str up ASAP!

That's not a BS assumption, he said in his original post he played ten years ago. I'm making a reasonable assumption that it was for longer than the 20 minutes required to figure out scrolls aren't precious. Nor do I care what his playstyle is - I'm simply asserting - correctly - that he'll be miserable in this environment if he can't stand losing even the most basic items.

I have nothing against newbs. I'm not shouting NEWB. I post helpful comments. So don't misconstrue my position with your gibberish. I'm sure the OP is a big boy and can separate helpful comments from trash talk. He doesn't need
your help, so don't condescend to him by defending him from my legitimate comments. And if he DOES need your help, then again, god help him on this shard. If my comments ON A FORUM drive him away, or if he can't simploy ignore comments he doesn't find useful, then how do think he has any chance to function in-game? Gimme a break.

I absolutely did not see your reply! I am so relieved that you actually bothered to read mine. Otherwise, I'd be pulling my hair out, hehe! Good luck and have fun in the game!

My rl friend started playing UO for the first time ever, right here on UOSA. He thinks it kicks ass.

He's been PKed more times than I can count, and does all the dumb newbie shit I can remember doing in '99 (like double clicking me in war mode trying to open my paperdoll, and getting whacked). There's so much knowledge in UO you take as given, and is pretty frustrating when you realise how much a new player has to learn ("it's not curing me!! oh.. i've been drinking the red ones").

When I first started, my T2A manual was a godsend. Where's the provisioners in Vesper? Get the manual. What title comes after The Kind? Get the manual. What kind of potion is a white potion? Get the manual. What circle spell is Teleport? Manual. How do I make the EPIC TREK from Britain to Minoc? Get the map, translate the runes on it using the manual, then work it out.

If I'd lost that thing I'd probably have quit the game in 1999 and wouldn't be here today.

I had the cloth map and pendant from the original box, no manual... didn't even own T2A until after UO:R. I learned the map just by wandering aimlessly, learned almost all aspects of gameplay just by playing. Heck, for the first few days I had no clue what I was even supposed to be doing until some guy gave me a shovel and told me to get to work.

Stratics was the win for information... though I've said it once and I'll say it again: much of it was totally inaccurate
