hey
a lot of what you see in the creation screen is for a part of the game we dont have here (doesnt exist in our time frame)
so stuff liek 'samurai' template etc wont work
I suggest you start out as this is your very first time, by chosing custom
then taking healing and swordsmanship
its very basic and you can start a new character anytime after you have wandered around in game for a bit
also chose at least 11 dexterity or you will be walking alot
Read through the guides section of the forums and get into IRC
IRC is critical for asking questions on the go

Re: hey need help
You cannot make ninja and such on this shard, what you may want to do is choose "advanced" and using the beginner guide here: http://wiki.uosecondage.com/?title=Beginners_Guide create a character.
Use the wiki above, and the "guides" section of the forums to figure out how to skill up your character.
I also had very minimal UO experience when I came here, between the two resources above, and a good guild i was able to learn the game acceptably well. You will also want to download an IRC client, and make your way to the #secondage chat room.
You will have no idea what you are doing for a while, just go with it and have fun, every time you play you will learn a bit more, but it won't be like a modern MMO where everything is laid out for you, you will have to discover a lot for yourself, and always ask questions and read relevant documents.
Good luck!

Re: hey need help
Once you get the hang of the game make a second char with the following skills:
50 magery
50 resist
Buy a mage hat from an NPC mage and make a macro, taking it off putting it back on and meditating.
Then buy some instruments and macro music to 100.0
Then macro provoke to 100.0 in the moonglow zoo (south east of moongate you should see it on your map.)
With this build you should have no trouble making cash.

Re: hey need help
This is a long one, but my sugestions are:
When creating your character, stay clear of the city of Britain. It is very crowded, and full of griefers (thieves, and players that will give you a hard time). Try basing your operations in smaller cities with all the amenities like Vesper, Trinsic or Skara Brae.
1st order of business is to build your char for whatever you want to do. I recomend reading through some of these to better understand what each skill does, and how it interacts with other skills. This is also a good guide of where you can go with your character's template. Most people will say: "Make a Bard", or "Make a Fletcher" to make money, then you can build other skills. That's fair, and good advice if you are a power gamer, but my suggestion to make the game more enjoyable would be: make whatever you want to be, there's plenty of money out there to be made.
2.- Build up stats. Once you have an idea of what you want to do, there are several ways to improve your stats (Strength, Intelligence, and Dexterity), these are the base of your character, and should take priority over skills at the beggining. There are several ways to build them up, some faster, some cheaper. The best price-performance wise is herding. Go to nearest provisioner, or arms vendor and buy a shephards crook. If you're in a small town, you can leave everything you own in the bank, and simply find any rat, cat, dog, bird that is about 2 screen away from the bank, but still inside town, and use the herding skill to make him move to where you want. Mining and camping are two other great ways of improving your stats (I personally have had good success by using a combination of herding and camping). Don't worry if you GM herding, you can always drop it later. This thread, and this second thread have a lot of useful information on how to raise your stats. (If you need help on how to do this, and talk to a person who can explain it easily, look for me on IRC in channel #C^V). For a guide on installing IRC follow this link.
3.- Start working "cheap" skills. Skills like Anatomy, Evaluating Intelligence, Hiding, Stealth, musicianship, provocation, etc. are practically free to get to 100. The guides section, and more specifically this thread and this other thread will provide plenty of info on how to do this.
4.- Never, ever, for any reason visit Britain's Graveyard, unless you are suicidal and want to be killed my multiple pk's (reds, player killers). There are plenty of other graveyards you can go to to gain some money and train.
5.- If you want to go out hunting in the wild, you should be fine, but if you plan on visiting any dungeon, or Britain's Graveyard, or Cyclops Valley in the New Lands, ALWAYS travel as part of a group to be safe.
6.- UO can feel a bit frustrating at the beginning for a new player, but it is filled with rewarding moments as you develop. No matter what you face, don't give up after your first day, keep trying, and you will find out you will enjoy the game enormously.

Re: hey need help
Some excellent advice in here. Few things I'd like to add, however, that made my experience when I started much easier. I've been playing for about a couple weeks and already have saved up enough to GM a few skills and to place my first house.
First, GM music and provo. Those are a give-in for being able to make easy money. Second, and a lot of people do not agree with me here, but GM hiding. I found it absolutely crucial for hunting when your stats might not be maxed out and you might not have magery trained up enough to be able to defend yourself.
Secondly, start with higher int than with str. The reason is that str is easier to level up than int is. Then head out to the woods with an axe, harvest as much lumber as you can from chopping trees, cut it into kindling and macro camping up. When you run out of kindling, do it again. When the gains start to slow down on str, find an animal in a secluded area and macro herding the animal onto yourself. Let it run overnight.
Odds are good that you're not going to be able to get to the max in str, but that's not your objective. Your objective is to have enough hitpoints to be able to go hunt and get some cash to buy regs and a few spells that you'll need to get deeper in some dungeons [reactivate armor, heal, greater heal, cure, poison, recall and some mark scrolls].

You can go from 10-100 str overnight with herding, easilyImpit wrote:

IMO start your first nubby with 50 healing + 50 resist, weapon skills can be gmed in a matter of hours and that is a great cash cow for bashing liches. You can easily be raking in gold on your second day, 20k/h np assuming you don't get interrupted (which you probably will)

Re: hey need help
Long post. Here's the basics:
http://wiki.uosecondage.com/?title=Main_Page
Choose Advanced.
Health/Strength = HP. Strength increases melee weapon damage.
Intelligence = Mana. More mana means you can cast more spells successively.
Dexterity = Stamina. A higher dexterity makes you attack with weapons faster.
If somebody attacks or tries to steal from you in a town, type "guards" (without the quotations) and hit enter to summon a guard to save you and kill the offender. You will know if you're not protected by the guards any more if you leave town and a message at the bottom left says, "You are no longer in the protection of the town guards."
Right click to walk and run.
Double click to open doors.
Press Tab and then double click on people and monsters to attack them. You'll notice, when you put your cursor over somebody, whether they are Blue, Red or Grey.
Blue means innocent. Doing bad things to innocents in town will get you killed.
Grey means a criminal or somebody who is attacking you.
Red means a murderer.
Go to a bank and say the word "bank" near the building to open your secure bank box to store valuables.
Go to vendors and type "vendor buy" and "vendor sell" to do the respective things.
Press "Alt O" to check out the User Interface Options. You can add things like macros.
For example, people usually set the F1 key to make their character say "vendor buy bank guards". There's lots more.
Alt J opens your Journal, which is a recording of stuff that's been said recently.
Alt S opens your Status, which is your Health, Mana and Stamina.
Alt I opens your Backpack.
Alt R opens a little map of the surrounding area. Double click on it to make it bigger or smaller.
Alt P opens your Character Paperdoll, where you can equip items.
Razor is really easy to figure out. Just explore the tabs. If you want to make a macro, just go to "Macros", click "New", enter the name of the Macro you're going to record (like "Musicianship" or "Hiding"), click "Record" and then do whatever it is in the game that you want to make a macro for like using the skill Hiding. You can set the macro to repeat itself by clicking on "Loop". Some skills have a delay between uses. Like Hiding for instance. You have to wait at least 10 seconds after using the skill to use it again. To include a "10 second Pause", right click on the last action in the "Actions" menu for your Macro, go to "Special Constructs", click on "Insert Pause/Wait", click on "Pause for" and enter the number of milliseconds between uses. 10000 Milliseconds is 10 Seconds.
The skill Herding will increase your STR.
Meditation and Evaluate Intelligence increases your INT.
Snooping increases your DEX.
You can have up to 225 Stat points and 700 Skill points. I strongly recommend you maximize your Stats before venturing into the wilderness. You can do this while you're AFK or whatever.
If you want something easy (and kind of fun if you like watching things kill each other) to play that'll get you money real fast, I recommend these starting skills:
Musicianship - 1 (this will get you an instrument that you will be able to use even if you die because it is "newbied", which means nobody can ever steal it but only if it's on the top level of your backpack so don't put it in any pouches or whatever)
Resisting Spells - 50 (this will make spells do less damage)
Any other skill of your choice - 49
Go to any Stables and record a Macro for using the skill Musicianship and Provocation. Provocation will make two animals or monsters fight each other to the death but only if you stay nearby. You need Musicianship to use this skill. Again, feel free to Macro when you're asleep, off at work or whatever.
Send me a PM if you have any other questions and I'll be happy to help.
