New to the shard, have a few questions.

Post by Errikos »

Hey, I have a few questions about some of the shard's mechanics.

First off, I need to know if a chainmail tunic applies its defense to hits taken to the arms in addition to the ones taken to the body. The UOSS combat page says that the chainmail tunic works for hits against the arms. But the UOSS armor page does not put an asterick by the chainmail tunic section like it does for other pieces of armor that cover both the body and arms.

Second, I want to know about how balanced the combat is. Are warrior types horribly outdone by mages? Is a pure-warrior build viable in PVP? Are there any combat-related skills such as parrying that are horribly over or underpowered?

I dont know about the tunic, I usually just wear bone on my warrior. With regards to pvp templates you'll find that most of the good pks are tank mages with swords and wield vanq hallys. However there are a couple dexxer pks that I've ran into that use kryss or war fork. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your POV, there is no added bonuses for warriors like on later version of OSI where you had your lumber warriors, etc. But if you are good and creative you can pvp as a warrior.

For a PvP warrior character:
Parrying is very underpowered.
Archery is very underpowered.
Meditation is underpowered.
Evaluate Intelligence is underpowered.
Detect Hidden is underpowered.
Poisoning is sort of underpowered.

As far as weapon skills, Macing, Swords, and Fencing all have their own advantages. Macing is good for longer fights, which most fights will be against competent players. I prefer poisonable weapons though. Fencing probably has a slight advantage over swords, because the kryss is faster than the katana, and in my eyes, that difference more than makes up the fact that fencing lacks a high-damage halberd type of weapon.

As far as supplemental skills, Magery is very nice to have. Not for 1v1 combat, but more for Recalling away from dangerous situations (i.e. multiple players chasing you down). Wrestling is actually somewhat useful, as is Hiding. Tracking is amazing. Meditation and EvalInt just don't work on a warrior, in my eyes.

And overall, yes warriors are great for PvP. If I had to fight a 1v1 fight with my castle on the line, I'd go with:

Magery
Magic Resist
Fencing
Tactics
Anatomy
Healing
Wrestling

...and I'd bring plenty of poisoned kryss' and war forks.

I understand the need for mages to have wrestling to prevent spells from getting interrupted, but what good does it do for a warrior? Or are you just using it to make sure those recalls to escape aren't interrupted?

Still have a couple unanswered questions.

Also, I'd like to know of inscription has any effect on spellcasting on Second Age.

Thats a good catch, and I have no idea. Given that it is explicitly listed on the combat page makes me think it should be.

No, it does not.

Yes, occasionally you'll want to try to fire off a spell with a dexer too. Most people just run offscreen to heal - they run until their bandage completes, if they're in trouble. But, you have a minimum of 25 mana, which equals 5 or 6 first-circle casts. So you can also mini-heal yourself with a dexer.

If you have 0 wrestling and do this, you're going to be getting whacked for practically as much damage as you're healing. But if you have 100 wrestling, you'll only get hit half the time you're stationary and mini-healing, so you can gain ground back in HPs.

But yeah - it's largely for level 4 spells - Recall, Greater Heal. I never used Wrestling on a dexer, but if I was making a dueling character, or a character that was really really defensive, I would use it. I much preferred Tracking to help me find people to fight... though it was near-useless in battle, I was lazy and it helped me find people to fight much more efficiently.
