Time contraints... Overall good time :).

Post by Elias »

Due to the lack of time I have to actually play, I wont be on that much. But the sever is great Derrick and I commend you for making it. You have a great player base and for the most part everyone's cool with the exception on a few players that like to grief the new guys and not allow them opportunities to improve.

The week or so I spent on T2A there are some things I noticed that could benefit the server.

Its not by the book T2A anyway.

1. Thieves are to powerful. They shouldn't be allowed to steal 100 bandies or regs at once. It ruins PvP and soon enough you'll have nothing but thief/mages running around. Boring people and ruining the server.

2. Make the Moonglow Zoo a non attack zone. This would give new players a chance to macro and get started without players coming in an killing all the animals. The town stables are fine to leave the same just give the new guys 1 place to get started :).

3. Spawn Despise with the following:

1st Level: Lizardmen, Mongbats, skeletons
2nd Level: Ettins and earth elementals
3rd Level: Trolls, Ogres, Ogre Lords, Slimes

This would be a benefit to all players, I think this is more UO:R, but it would populate that dungeon more and allow newer players a chance to make decent money instead of pocket change. Pk's would still be an issue but hey its UO.

4. Young title for new players. Givem a chance to go out and not get killed 50 times in a row in the Brit Grave yard by some asshole that gets off by annoying New players. Yes its UO and I know Trust me I've been playing since 1997. But if you seriosuly have to kill new players with 80 str to make you feel elite then you have serious issues. Give other players a chance to get started it will only benefit the server.

All of these make perfect sense. If you want to stick to the T2A era only then I have some other info for you.

1. Why do you have horses?

2. Why are 3rd Party programs such as Razor allowed? You can't get a true T2A feel with razor, it makes the game to easy.

3. No practice weapons are given at the start.

4. A few other things not worth mentioning.

My point is, yes make the server as close to T2A as possible, but add a few other things in as well. I'm not saying go strait into UO:R. But add a couple things to improve it.

With all that being said. I wish T2A the best of luck and it saddens me to actually be quitting UO after 11 years lol. Its been a long time.

You had me going until you asked why we had horses.

On the stealing of bandages issue. The discrepancy on the bandage weight was only brought to my attention last night. This is a huge error, bandages are supposed to weigh one stone, currently they weigh 0.1. This will be fixed very soon, the code was actually in to change it this morning, but was pulled last minute for fear of overloading people, so we will give some warning before we make this change.

With the exception of macro looping, the UOA program was allowed by OSI in era and is very similar to Razor. We don't have the practice weapons, but we actually do plan to add them. In a recent patch the durability of newbie gear was substantially increased.

Be well Mike, glad you enjoyed the shard and best of luck to you.

Welcome to the shard!

Unfortunatly I and most people here will disagree with just about all of your suggestions.

1. Thieves are to powerful. - you cant gimp the class, thats what OSI did. If a thief steals from you and you attack him, and he ends up killing you, he gets a count and gets kicked out of the theifs guild. Only scenario that is similar to what you are saying is a group of Guildies or PKS with a thief as a support char. I think that sounds like good gaming to me.

2. Make the Moonglow Zoo a non attack zone. -No, nothing was easy on t2a

3. Spawn Despise with the following: - EH.. dungeons spawns are debated but not a game breaker for me either way

4. Young title for new players. No, never, no-way etc... huge part of what ruined UO. Being new in the game is like anything else in RL... take your lumps and learn from them. Besides... if you are defenceless for more than a couple days in this era (and having the knowledge of all the time spent on OSI) you arnt doing something right...

Hope you enjoy it here. I sure do!

Welcome!

Despise is for starting lowbies, if you want Earth Ele's go to Shame and if you want Ettins, Trolls, and Ogres go to Wrong? The challenge of t2a was actually easy if you knew the tricks of survival. Hope you can learn them and enjoy it more, maybe someone can help you out?

The idea that thieves are too powerful is bizarre. We can steal. But in order to do so, we devote 200 of our 700 points to that. So we can either be a gimped dexxer or gimped mage with the rest. Yes, we can steal reagents, bandages and weapons. And, yes, some people are foolish enough to let this happen. But there are plenty of ways to avoid this fate. We poor thieves die A LOT. So smart thieves at least carry very little equipment: a weapon, bandages, fishsteaks and maybe a cure pot or two. If you're a mage-thief, god help you with reagents. (I simply avoid all fights on my mage thief.)

Put the odd template together with second rate equipment and you have yourself a character that cannot beat a good PvPer. And that is as it should be. People that complain that thieves fall into two categories:

(1) Newbies that attack thieves: Don't do it! You are new! You can't fight yet! Some thieves can!

(2) Too Dumb to Keep from Being a Mark: It's not a balance issue that you don't take measures to keep a thief from stealing your mandrake. Live and learn.

Simple rule of thumb: If you are not a 7x GM PvP character, do not attack someone that steals from you. Bards and newbs, I'm looking at you. Let them keep that stack of 20 mandrake. You'll be happier without it than also without everything else you're carrying.

I will say that with gimp'ed healing on this shard it makes any type of dugeon crawling a pain in the ace with scorps and giant serps...

18 seconds heals + 15 second aid after that (assuming you dont get poisoned again which you probably will) does not make dungeon crawling effective or more importantly fun for any type of developing player. Especially one who doesnt want to use magery.

This.

The bodies are really piling up for my thief.

Some people just never learn.

Though, I will go so far as to say if you're not a dexer, don't attack a thief. I specifically target the mages with halberds in their bag. They always have good loot, and they think they're a badass so they almost always attack.

I even had a bard attack me yesterday. Was going to beat me to death with his harp, apparently. That was a particularly sweet kill because he had about 9k in gems on him, on top of his 160 stone reg bag.

So do you just take the counts and macro them off your thief?

I thought that if you stole and got attacked your were still on the hook for the kill?

I know how it was but its not too difficult to avoid, and those 15gp cure potions the vendor sells cures that poison :D

These are strictly my opinions. I got some of these idea's when I talked to other players. Some new to the server like myself. I agree nothing was easy. I remember those days well.

Derrick what I was saying is you make things easier for players in some ways to make the server more fun.

I don't remember T2A having horses, or being able to raise and drop skills. I could be wrong, it happens im not the biggest UO buff in the world, I have just played for a very long time. I remember when they brought in UOA and im pretty sure it was after UO:R or during UO:R. But no It wasn't that close to razor, the best thing about that macroing wise is it allowed to to do 8x8.

Hoots You make as many good points as I thought I did, like I said its all based of my opinions. What I have gathered from talking to others and so on.

Ezp trust me man I know them :). As I said this isn't all for me, I said Im leaving due to time constraints and that I noticed a few things that could possible help the server, thats why I mentioned them. Nothing bad intended suggestions only. But fighting those are weak and a waste of time. Despise needs to be hooked up.

Chumbucket- Thieves are to powerful. Stealing 100 bandies at once? I could see a few at a time. BUt taking a dexxer out of the fight in one quick motion is not UO. I rocked dexxers back then and hardly ever lost. But if you get 100 bandies per grab what can a dexxer do? Run away non stop lol? (Yeah thats really UO).

Alot of thieves will make excuses to keep things the way they are, because they are personally benefiting from it. and dont give me that who we waste 200 of out 700 skill points crap. as a dexxer you have 200 left over anyways.

For example: Thief/dexxer

1. Swords
2. Tactics
3. Anatomy
4. Healing
5. Resist/hiding
6. Stealing
7. Snooping

Thief/Mage:

1. Magery
2. Meditation
3. Eval Int
4. Wrestling
5. Resist/hiding
6. Stealing
7. snooping

Yes, if you steal all of a dexxer bandages, you will make him run or he will die. (Non stop)

Hope that answers the whole thieves wanting it easy deal. And no a PvP thief would have tons on him.

Chumbucket, this isn't about a freaking bank sitter getting a few bandages jacked from him, so whatever your thinking just stop because your wrong before you even start to type. Every example you have given has been a random thief walks up steals.

My scenario is where you are fighting, whether your blue, grey or red. A PvP thief attacks you. Steals all of your bandages in 1 action, and your only option is to run or die. Its a simple concept. I know its how it was but Christ not 100 bandies lol.

Aye. The bandage issues in more that just a problem it's a complete inaccuracy, and I want to thank you again for bringing it to my attention yesterday

To my knowledge, and I didn't play pre-T2A, mounts have been in UO since day one and certainly though the entire T2A era whose launch introduced rideable llamas. Although mounts were referred to as horses pre-t2a (10/1 98 patch note) since that's the only thing you could ride.

Mounts were not used because you basically ran the same speed on it as on foot and that's coz most ppl had 56k. Then uoe came around with fastwalk and well that's when ppl used mounts during t2a me included :D

Pre t2a not many ppl used mounts coz of what I said above this. Why waste gold on something that doesn't boost your speed coz in that era technology wasn't what it is today.

This semi-coherent rant brought to you by Elias. I'm not sure what in my original post provoked your ill-expressed rage, so let me clarify.

If someone steals all your bandages in one shot, your only options are run, die or give up PvP because you don't come to a fight prepared. You say of me that "your wrong" before I even type and that all of my examples are of "a random thief walks up steals," but I wasn't giving examples. I was simply explaining good practices. Smart thieves don't carry many goods. Why? Because thieves die a lot. Guards kill us. Ganks kill us. Decent PvPers usually kill us. Dying is what we do, and to make a go of being a thief you have to travel light. When you find my corpse, you find about 50 bandages, 15 cooked fishsteaks, an exceptional qstaff (that I made myself) and some times one of the about one of twenty or thirty ringmail tunics I have on hand from looting NPC orcs at town invasion events (I'm not just there to steal your trophies). Total loss of a standard death to me = less than 100 gold.

Now, you say that you're talking about PvP thieves, but I am as PvP a thief as it gets, aren't I? I suppose you could make thief, join an order guild and hang out at Buc's. But I really don't think many people do that. Your time would be much better spent with a tank mage.

And, yes, thieves do suffer from putting down 200 points minimum on stealing related skills. If I could have my pick of any two of the following, my character would be much, much more effective in fights: parry, poisoning, archery, magery, meditation, evaluate intelligence, wrestling, hiding, stealth. Every skill counts in a fight. And if I were simply fighting, there is no way that stealing or snooping would be on my list of skills to take for that last two hundred. If you think that dexxers have 200 "left over anyways", your attitude towards PvP templates is not the right one to have.

As to wanting things to continue as they are because of personal benefits. This is true. I do benefit from the way things are. As things are, it is possible to play a serious thief. It is possible to do things besides simply steal at the bank and hope to bank the loot before dying. What isn't possible is to make a lot of gold out of stealing. Sure. You get big scores. Some times you kill someone and get all of their loot. Some times you steal a boat key or a trophy. But those things come so infrequently that you do better pixelwise to just bard or mine. The real benefit is in there being a type of character that isn't held back by poor AI [PvM], potential stat-loss and all the restrictions that come with being red [PK] or the same thing over and over again [PvP and the previous two as well]. Being a thief is really fun. It offers a kind of freedom in your play style that nothing else matches. I go where I want, I do what I want except outright murder blues. So, yes, I do benefit, even if not in pixels.

Back to the issue of bandages, if bandages were heavier back in the day, then by all means let it be changed. One, I'm not too worried about bandage stealing strategies becoming ineffective or even less effective. I steal less, but you also will carry less. Two, and more importantly, era accuracy.

So I hate to sound touchy, but I am constantly worried that changes will be made that make this shard less free and so less fun. It is probably a bit silly, given the track record of the shard, but there it is.
