Knowing a thief is in the thieves guild = attackable in town

For ideas on how to make Second Age a better shard. Can it get any better? Maybe.

Also, they can be attacked in town if you know they're thieves - even

What I think the designer was saying is if you reveal a thief to be in the thieves' guild you can freely attack the thief even in town. You will flag grey to him only, guards cannot be called on you for attacking or the thief should that thief try to steal from you after aggroing on him.

This is being taken severely out of context. If you go back to the first posts of the thread, they specifically quote sections of the HoC chat from January of 99 regarding the new thieves guild. What many people are doing is taking snippets of what Raph said and making their own responses to it, and what you quoted is one such example. Additionally, that thread is from before the thieves guild, so any mechanics at that time involving the vulnerability of a thief to attack was subject to change as a result of the new patch, and the mechanics are pretty clearly spelled out.

This is a Game designer talking about the changes that they were going to implement when they were going to put in the theives' guild.

This isn't just speculation of the players.

It was speculation of designers of what they were going to implement, not what was implemented.

The only thing I'm sure of is when a thief steals something, he is permagrey to all until he dies. The thief will only show up grey to the person he stole from, or those who saw him steal, but any blue who attacks him will not be guard whacked, whether he was showing blue to them or not at the time.

As far as always being able to kill a thief in town even when he's not criminal flagged, it was said that you could do that with members of the thieves' guild, but I never saw anyone else doing it on OSI. I remember it saying something about it on the thief beginner's guide on the UO site, but that guide might have predated some patch that changed it. Those guides were really lousy during the T2A era. Outside of town, thieves guild members couldn't give murder counts under any circumstances. I'm not 100% sure if attacking them turned you grey to others, but I believe it did.

Well I believe thats where forensic evaluation came in, to REVEAL a thief making him attackable whether he was flagged or not.

Forensics would tell you if they were in the Thieves' guild, but I don't think it made them grey to you. If that had been the case, I imagine every griefer on OSI would have a townie with the skill just to go around killing random thieves when they were bored. There would probably be scores of old "nerf forensics" posts floating around for reference too.

Look up the old debate about Forensics detecting perma gray status (which it should and does not, now at least). There was a huge discussion with the old BPD guild, and I posted factual patch note proof that forensics does not do any of these magical things it is rumored to do.
