anybody who's pvped for longer than a few hours knows that using scripts to automate any kind of pvp is a stupid idea. they do not provide very much benefit outside of performing basic actions for you and any timing involved can be learned very quickly. complicated scripts will more than likely get you killed eventually.

feeling helpless because you died to 4 people is part of the game. to imply pvp is 'dead' because you got ganked, or because they were 'scripting' is pretty stupid. i suggest reading some of the player written guides on how to stock yourself properly and how to escape and you may be a bit more fortunate in the future. if you're really paranoid, invest 40 skill points in tracking and spam the skill constantly.

Wow usually I have to read the trash talk forums to get my weekly dose of QQ about someone being killed in game. In fact the forums are one of my favorite aspects of this shard and a testiment to the true community that exists here.

The tea must be bitter before it can be sweet. There must be loss before there can be gain. Anything worth acheiving requires hardship. And yeah, everyone gets pk'd when they are starting out. But honestly, its must easier to make a living here then it ever was during T2A, at least from my experience.

There are many different playstyles here and player run events almost daily. Remember that the great thing about UO, and UOSA, is that the players are given more freedom to forge their environment than any other online game I have played. This does lead to more abuse, but the duality is that a player can use their imagination alot more. There is lots of fun to have beyond grinding air elementals. And to all that do not enjoy playing here, just look on the bright side, you did not have to spend any money!

I disagree with a lot of the complaints about the players on this server. I am new also, having not played since late 2000, I have been here for a week and some change, and found the community helpful and welcoming.

Sure, I was PKed many times while farming for the last week, but that is half the reason that UO is fun, and none of the PKs dry looted me/killed my horse. They just took gold and left, some even gave a gate to town. Without the risk of being PKed farming would be horribly boring in this game. The moment of excitement and terror when a new name appears on the screen, or a gate opens, is unrivaled in any other game. Is this person friendly? Will he kill me? Is he a scout for PKs? All rush through your mind. I think for every time I have been PKed, I have been helped out in one way or another by a friendly player. Even with all the deaths I was able to farm enough gold for a small house and near enough gold to GM my magery in about a week.

Even with the large amount of PKing on this server, starting out is way easier then I remember from OSI. The Wiki is well written and informative, and the ability to unattended macro allows you to create a character capable of useful farming in under a day.

Great post Wak! My account turned 7 days old today so I've been here for a full week now, even though I've only been out hunting for a couple of those days my experiences sound to be about the same as yours. I've met some truly awesome people and have had a lot of fun. When I decided to give UO another shot I fully expected it to be less fun than this and short lived, but I can clearly see myself playing UOSA for a long period of time.

Just things like chance encounters with a bunch of other lowbies at a spawn that were having trouble staying alive so I provo'd the whole spawn and split everything with them and made a bunch of new friends in one shot is totally worth the occasional PK/dry loot, although I'm running low on feathered hats...mean people take'n mah hats!

When I started in late feb last year, I also expected my stay to be short lived - around a week for nostalgia purposes. Instead of getting bored, I grew an attachment to the server. I play off and on now, UO is not my life but any time I want to play UO, there's only one place I'll turn to (UOSA).

No.
Yes.
Always.

The best advise I could give any new player here is don't trust them further than you could throw them.

I've been around for about 3 weeks and I've got to agree somewhat with the OP as well as disagree, somewhat, with what's been said above... I've been PK'd- like everyone else starting out- countless times. On one occasion I was actually robbed by a guy who threatened to kill me if I didn't fork over the gold- which I did. I appreciated not being kill but like I said, this was ONE occasion.

In the past week I have been town killed three times (with no chance to add a murder count), been PK'd on hunts at least twice... and all for what? A set of bone armor and 30ish regs? It's obnoxious in the beginning

Don't get me wrong I get that PK'ing is a part of the server and I enjoy the "terror" aspect as well. But in 90% of the instances in which I was killed, my horse met the same fate, and I was left with little more than my own annoyance to accompany the long walk to a wandering healer.

In an effort to balance this frustrating aspect of being a newb, I think it may be worth committing a player or two of your own account to hunting PKs. Think about it? Do we really want some sort of Trammel fix? Not really... but we don't like being kicked when we're down either. Thus, I suggest we new players get through the newb stages, get established, and commit to either helping OTHER new players out for a little while, or organizing some sort of in-game PK hunt. Or maybe, work with 4 or 5 players to "secure" hunting areas for some safe hunting... and the added opportunity for PVP with scripts and all :P

I would agree with this completely... Don't trust people you don't know on UOSA.

There are some great people, but many are ass hats waiting for you to trust them for two seconds so they can get your loots O.O
