True Test of Skill
True Test of Skill
I am just curious how many people here would be interested in a true T2A test of skill tournament? Basically, in my opinion, third party programs (including razor) take most of the skill out of the game.
With a little bit of time I could, fairly easily, develop a server/client program. Anyone who enters a tournament would connect to my server. Randomly or at some set interval the client would send the server a screenshot of your desktop as well as a list of programs running. This should prevent most people from being able to use third party since it would be seen. The only people who still could are those who could try and hack it.
This leaves only one issue and thats the client side macros that have been added long sense the T2A era.
This means, true to the era without using what were, at the time, illegal programs, it would provide a tourney that would require you to manually equip, unequip, drink potions, etc.

Re: True Test of Skill
I dont know if i would agree that a "true test ok skill" is PvPing with no equip/target macros...
It probably is something that OSI would have included if they thought about.
I do agree that razor has gone atleast 5 steps further than it probably should have with macros and the ease of doing certain things but its hard to go back.
Its kind of like saying a true test of driving skill is getting in a 1930's stick shift car that was a pain to drive and racing up down hills and around tight turns... I see it more as an annoyance than a test of skill.

Re: True Test of Skill
Hoots, IMO your analogy is flawed, but let me stick with it for a few.
We're playing a 1930s racing game with new age technology under the hood of our cars. Why not make it more era accurate?
While this idea may also be flawed and more work than it's worth, I think it's an interesting idea.
The reason we see so many more mages than dexers in comparison nowadays is because razor made it easier to be a mage. Arguably, playing a mage with razor is still more hard than playing a dexer. Imagine taking out all the neat abilities of razor coupled with the fact that back then, there were a lot more "newbies" running around.
Removing razor might just shift the power over to the dexers a bit, and we all know that no one wants that, right?

Re: True Test of Skill
This isn't about dexxer vs mage, its merely about skill of the player. Back in the day, unless you were cheating, the truly skilled players had to manage their resources manually.
- You didn't get counters to tell you when you are low on regs.
- Your back pack was neatly organized so you could easily click a potion or bandage.
- You didn't get to cycle through targets or call up 'last target'.
- You didn't get to drink a potion and have your weapon auto unequip and reequip.
- And you certainly didn't get fancy one use macros, you had to manage your trapped pouches.
I am saying, in my opinion, the true test of skill was when a person managed this stuff themselves rather then having it automated for them. And as such, I am wondering how much interest there would be in a tournament such as this. I am not asking for opinions on whether you think thats 'true skill' or not or am I asking whether it'll hurt mages or dexxers more.
In the end, the software wouldn't be difficult, but I don't wanna waste my time if no one is interested. I guess I shoulda made it into a poll.

Re: True Test of Skill
Yeah, if you wanted a "Yes" or "No" answer, you should have made a poll.
I guess this thread is now considered the opinion thread to the subject, eh?
Some people may take the removal of razor as forcing them to be a dexer.
I'm all for trying it out, though.

Really? I would think removing third party programs would hurt dexxers more than mages...Red wrote:Yeah, if you wanted a "Yes" or "No" answer, you should have made a poll.

Note: UO has always allowed you to have macros in game...it doesn't mean you'd have to physically open your spell book each time you want to cast..
Re: True Test of Skill
I played a pot chugging dexer with parry throughout T2A.
Chugging potions manually isn't hard, it just takes some concentration.
I haven't used the UO macro arm/disarm much lately, but from what I remember it was very clunky and didn't work all the time. I guess I was assuming that it still sucks as bad. Also, when was Last Target introduced as a macro in UO?

Re: True Test of Skill
Everyone used UO Assist in the era, which is very similar to razor.
Re: True Test of Skill
Razor has far more power than UOAssist.
Re: True Test of Skill
all the stuff i use razor for now, i had available in uoassist

<IronfistMax> tell me where you are in game, and ill come thank you personally
Mad_Max: blackfoot you sent everyone to a slaughter

Re: True Test of Skill
So in other words, it sounds like most people wouldn't be willing to give up their macros and I would be wasting my time doing such a tournament ^_^
Re: True Test of Skill
i would do this on my dexxer no prob lol
