Stealing and newbies

Post by vistal »

Considering my 2 of my 3 first threads are about stealing, i'm giving myself away, but i felt this was an important note to make on the forums. I'm a fan of thieves, i am a thief, but we have to be careful. A thief inspires far more anger in a player than a pk ever thought about, especially when you're the kind of thief who tries to kill the person for attacking you.

Hanging out at the brit GY i have noticed that many thieves like to target newbies. This is understandable in that most of our character is built around thieving with combat as an afterthought. Please don't do this though. It discourages shard growth. Stealing from someone established who has but to re-equip to be back in the action is not a big deal. Stealing that 300 gold from someone looking to buy armor for the first time is. It could cause them to quit the shard before getting established.

To all thieves, please wait until someone has something worth stealing before bothering. Don't ruin a newbies day just for the hell of it. If you let them be and train, in the end, we'll just have more people to steal from.

He's right to some degree. The Brit GY should just somehow be in a guard zone without actually killing the spawn. It would solve all the discouraging issues of new players and give them a place right next to the main city to choose to learn the game.

That wouldn't be accurate though, but, yeah stealing from a character 1 day old only hurts the server. For everyone you say is "motivated", 19 are unimpressed and quit.

New players shouldn't hunt at the Britain Graveyard.

Try Britain Sewers, it's not bad money for something a brand new character can easily glide through. Also the woods all around Britain are prime newbie hunting zones, and no one seems to take the time to do this.

I would have figured this issue was beat to death by now. I thought taht was common sense to anyone who has played UO for more than 2 hours.

New players shouldn't be in brit at all until they can mark and recall. There is no reason to be there unless you are selling or being a carebear. There are lots of other places to hunt & bank.

The first time I was in UO I got lost and took the valley pass north to the road leading to Yew. Instead of going into yew I turned south and took the road all the way south. I was lost for like 3 days... and I was scared to death of running into PKs (and I did too) but I eventually ran into someone with their guild and they helped me out. I look back with fondness of that time to this very day. You don't really think about it at the time but later on you play other games and see that a lot of them don't have that experience.

I did get lost but the outcome was that I no longer needed a map because, being lost for 3 days, it gave me a lot of time to map out the roads in my head. Now it's impossible for me to get lost.

Being griefed is part of the game. It's accurate to the era. If you don't like it then leave. If you don't like PKs then kill them. If you don't like thieves then make a detective (there is a guide on stratics). There are a lot of things you can do here and I guarantee you will have fun doing them.
