It depends on the version of Britannia in question. Presumably, the UO version is what you're after.
I'd go so far as to say it's about the size of Long Island, albeit proportioned differently.
Can't speak for overseas as I'm not big on geography :).

Perhaps about a 5 or 6 square miles? I dunno, just guessing. :)

I know LI is much larger than that, but I'm trying to get a mental image going. LI is probably way off base, more like San Francisco in size considering you can walk from one end to the other in pretty short order.

Then again, if you do the math of UO time vs real time it's what, like 2 RL hours per UO day?

Ok fine, leave it for someone who's good at this :P

It's probably smaller than you would expect it to be. It shouldn't be hard to calculate: one tile is about one average footstep, how many average human footsteps are in a mile, or how big is the average human footstep rather? ... then look at the dimensions of britannia in tiles.

UO considers horse and human steps the same, so to average it out you can consider 1 meter per step (roughly 1,600 meters per mile), how many tiles across is the map? That would be a rough approximation of size.

I think it also matters if you think of it as a literal size or a representation of size. Does Brit really only have say 100 buildings? Or do those 100 buildings represent a much larger city that just wasnt code-able in a game made back in the late 90s?

I always think of Brit as more like the cities in Assassins Creed, and the continent of Britannia being more equal to England back in the day. A few very large cities with small villages and random farms scattered around.

At its longest points the mainland is about 3500 tiles x 3500 tiles.

Taking one tile as 1 metre (seems to work with character heights, door sizes etc) I make that just over two miles in each direction.

It is, as they say, a small world :)

UO Britannia is tiny when compared to any sandbox, and factoring in the lost lands is like adding a couple of city blocks. For comparison WoW is 80sq mi, and that's one of the smaller mmo worlds. Lord of the rings online is 30,000 sq mi. And Elderscrolls 2: Daggerfall was 62,000 square miles, but I think that was partially procedurally generated.

Assuming one tile is 3 feet means that most of the trees we're lumberjacking are 6 to 9 feet tall - no wonder they run out of wood so fast!
