Poll: Save Times?

Post by Light Shade »

What's an acceptable save time for people? How much is "too much" time to lose if the shard crashes? What are your thoughts on this subject. I personally have no serious stake in the matter, but I have seen this issue discussed quite a bit since 2008 and i'm just curious to see what people think. What's a good balance between save times and losses?

I think (and voted) 1 hour is the most I would be willing to 'lose' if the server crashed. I don't mind waiting a minute or two every half an hour but more than an hour would really suck especially if you are farming or get a good item.

I'd have to stick with 1/2 hour, although its a pain during duels/pvp when the world save goes off, it would still suck more losing even half an hour of playtime.

I went for 1.5, but could easily have gone for 2hrs.

Server crashes are not frequent enough to have to worry too much about this, and normally when it crashes once, there sometimes are several "replicas" after, so we could go with 2hrs, and if the server crashes (you'd have to have REALLY bad luck to loose something irreplaceable in those 2hrs), start saving every 30 mins until it is stabilized again.

I voted 2 hours but am curious about 2 things.

How long are save times now?

How often do reverts actually happen each month?

I believe the current saves are on 30 minute intervals.

We've been tossing around the idea of using a journaling system to effect db changes in the background without the need for the world to ever have a visible "save time". This is the method used by other MMORPGs. The biggest drawback we have at the moment is that the database is currently in a flat file format and not in a database format such as MySQL or SQL Server. Maybe someone would like to step up and offer to create a MySQL database for all the variables and entity types that exist in the game. This would definately help us along...

1 hour seems about right. It's interesting to hear that it's currently on 30 minute intervals, because when playing it SEEMS like it's every 5 or 10 minutes. Time flies when you are having fun I suppose.

Do we have a list of these variables and entity types?
