how long does it take for a short term murder to go away?

8 hours or so.

Oddly it seems way faster than that. I seem to have worked off 4 while at work for 8 hours...

The timer seems to immediately after you received the count, not after your most recent murder. So, it's definitely possible to burn multiple counts within a short span of each other.
