Bandit camp spawns not linking key to chest?

Twice now I've come across an NPC bandit spawn, killed all the NPCs and found a copper key on one (and only one) of them. Alongside the spawn is always a locked wooden box. The key can't open the lockbox because the key is blank. Is this intentional?

The box is unlockable using the lockpicking skill and contains a weak trap and level 1 (or sub-level 1) loot.

The key goes to another chest. Wich then holds a key to another chest, that is the chest wich holds the key you are looking for.

I dont know why the key is blank (an npc joke perhaps), but when there's a key it's at the prison camp spawns and the key unlocks the npc that wants to be taken somewhere...... a key never unlocks the chest..

Aye, it's not intended to have the key unlock the chest. This may be a bug related to a camp with no prisoner spawn.

This particular camp had a prisoner, and I'm not 100% but I think I was able to open the chains before I looted the key. I know this because I provoked the bandits onto each other, released him, saw he wanted to go to Jhelom so killed him and the bandits with an EV. It was only then that I looted the corpses, including the key, and tried to open the chest.

This is how every bandit camp spawn I've seen is. I'm pretty sure the [blank] key does nothing whatsoever.

They are still like this. You can unlock the chained up npc without a key. And the key to the box or chest was ALWAYS on one of the bandits in era. I remember this. But here, its just blank keys that unlock nothing.

It feels very much like a bug to me.

Imagine running out to one of these camps advertised at the message board at the bank.
No regs, just a newbie warrior character.

Not a bug, the blank key is for getting fame/karma from releasing the escort. You can still unlock them without they key but you don't get any fame/karma w/out the blank key

I hadn't played UO in about ten years or so, so I can't remember if the key unlocked the chests or not. I have 60 lockpicking skill and can open one of the chests, but why can't I open the other one? Do I need a higher skill in lockpicking?

I like the loot I'm getting from these camps, but wish I could open both boxes. I really wish the key would unlock the second box that I can't open, that would make sense. How do you get the second box open?

99% sure one box uses the key and the other is just a regular dungeon type chest (loot is a teensy bit different) that can be picked or unlocked with magic

I wish the key worked on either, I tried for quite a long time to use the key on both boxes (nobody around at all where I was so I took my time) and have done this in six camps now with no success. I can pick one of the locks as I have a pretty high skill in lockpicking, but the other says a weird message I can't remember, something about that I can't figure out how to unlock it. I just got magic unlock, but am building up my magery and will try that next time I get one of those chests.

Yes, when there have indeed been two chests.

Yet in roughly 30-40 camps attempted, I have not found one that linked the key properly to either chest.
