New Blood

Post by Black1Wolf2 »

Hello ^^
As the title says I am new to both the shard and to Ultima Online in general, been tinkering around with the tutorial offered by the shard but to put it bluntly... the closest thing I've played to Ultima Online in terms of complexity is EVE Online and so... yeah bit... overwhelmed. Could anyone point me out to some comprehensive guides or anything like that? (a pdf would be perfect but anything is better than nothing).

Also as far as what I'd like to do in-game would be a crafter with some combat skills... is something like that possible? (looking at tailor, bowyer, lumberjack, miner in terms of crafting for now).

PS: Sorry if this is on the wrong subforum... couldn't find any noob/introduction sections to post in :(

Welcome to UOSA :)
Coming from Eve Online will give you an advantage, expect the same cut-throat behavior here.

I'd suggest you launch the IRC Chat at the top of the forum and join the #NEW channel - Dedicated guild for helping new folks start out, and you'll find some more in the same boat as you.

Guidewise, the wiki is a good place to start and the guides section of the forum could help you get started

Thank you ^^ and that was what I was hoping for (being a paranoid bastard in themepark games is... kind of a disadvantage but in EVE it's basically a survival trait). That said are there any areas besides towns which are "safe" ? ( like high sec is in EVE basically, you still can get killed but your attacker also gets some guard love ).

Thanks for the IRC tip, does Chatzilla work with it or do I need to go dig up a copy of mIRC? (god it's been close to a decade since I've used that program).

No Safety outside of towns I'm afraid (and one town with no Guards at all - Being Buccaneers Den, pirates...Arr!)

Yeah your Paranoia will serve you well here. I don't know about Chatzilla but the IRC from the website does operate as a webclient, failing that, I personally use mIRC.

Ok I'll get on later today or tomorrow (bit busy at the moment with some stuff).

What's the general timezone of the server?

Are there more people like me around? (IE new/relatively new)

The official timezone I believe is Georgia USA. Players are from everywhere, I've seen Scandinavians, Europeans, Australians, Americans all very recently.

Plenty of new and relatively new players too, population seems to be on the increase!

K, lemme know if you see any romanians floating around face down in a moat, I'd like to not be the only one doing that from my country :D

Chatzilla does work well! =)

Just type:
/attach irc.wildirc.net
/join secondage
/join new

right click on the tabs and check "open on startup".

Voila!
The first thing I do when I start out on a new server, is equip my starting dagger in one hand, my starting candle in my other hand, run into the Britain inn, sit down at a table, and write my hopes and dreams for UO in my diary. -Luthius

Hi
Maybe you dont intend this but It seems you might be thinking you will create a viable character that will be able to fight via combat and be a crafter. You are allowed three accounts. I would suggest a dedicated fighter template and a dedicated crafter.
Also I would suggest you make more than one type of crafter. You are only allowed 700 in skill points per character.

There is a concept of a "townie". in general a character not suitable for life outside of town. ie no resist for example.

Avoid west brit bank. Thieves are everywhere. some of them are quite good. bank at another town if possible.

oh your first task shoudl be get your strength to 100. you can do herding or camping. or my favorite arms lore. then after you are done and you dont want that skill for that character click the skill lock on that to where its pointing down. same goes for herding or camping skills.

UO is EVE's Grand Daddy!

and.... yes... avoid west brit bank... Many thieves, sho-offs and trash. Occlo is a nice place to be left alone, but its an island. Vesper is also a good place for the mainland!

I'd recommend Vesper or Skara. Has every kind of shop. relatively safeish banks. lovely towns. my favorites :)
