Taming: Effective way to kill off tamed pets?

Post by Jakob »

Hi!

I've read that good manners in taming is to kill your pets for others coming afterwards and also for your own sake. I'm currently on the Dagger Isle taming polar bears and what not, and I read you should kill them of in the dungeon there (is it Deceit?), but it doesn't go very quickly when having like 10 polar bears.

Any help would be appreciated! And any other tips worth knowing while gaining taming on this island.

You have 2 good options... you go into the dungeon and release all. causing them to be on a different map so they will respawn on the outside of the dungeon the dagger isle map.

2nd option keep 2 polar bears tame 3rd.. release third a kill b kill the released 3rd bear

Wow, thanks! Didn't know that I could just release them in the dungeon. That's a lot faster than killing them.

I think it helps a lot to know what kills what, especially on dagger. For instance the walrus will lose to every other animal there. Polar bears will win against everything else. I am not sure, but I think snow leopards win against white wolves. Use this to your advantage by starting fights that you don't need to micromanage.

another thing I used was the orc spawn. Take note of where it is when you see it and try your best to use that. It's probably the fastest way, if in a good location, for you to kill mass amounts of your tames. Especially when they get stuck on someone macroing in a house.. that was like a gold mine in my eyes :)

one fun fact that comes in more handy in the bog of desolation, but can be used here, is that animals that have been tamed and released will automatically aggro monsters. So you do not need to leave things tame for them to get attacked by monsters, or orcs.

one not so fun fact is that fights will not continue when no one is around to witness it. So if you really want something to die, you need to watch it die. Sucks, and makes finding a few orcs all the more valuable on dagger. Again, polar bears win 1v1 against the other creatures so use that to your advantage.

One strategy I used for a bit was to gather all my tames in one 'central' location relative to where I thought orcs might be. When I found the orc spawn, I went back to my gathering of tamed creatures and led them over to the orcs for slaughter. Kind of comical considering the tame messages that you give to the animals prior to this. "I've always wanted a pet like you".

Once I hit the benchmark to tame white wolves, I kind of stopped taming polar bears. The big reason was because they seemed way harder to kill off ( they are the strongest creature there). But secondly, if you just tame wolves you can easily kill them on polar bears in a 1 on 1 fight. Its fast too. And you will fail so often that every white wolf offers a good amount of gains. By the time you hit the benchmark to tame bulls, wolves are still a decent fail rate. I would suggest taming only white wolves once you can tame them, for those reasons.

don't forget to turn on scavenger for all the reagents, it was amazing to me how much you get on dagger. the place is just littered with regs... Oh, good luck =] sorry my post is so long and rambling haha

Thanks for putting your heart into your post, I like that! ;) Thanks for your tips! For now I'm just trying to run around in the woods, just releasing my pets without killing them of. Since many people train on Dagger that wouldn't work there, but out on random places I reckon there wouldn't be too much of a problem. What do you think about that?

Just going to be very slow anywhere other than dagger I think..

Taming sucks for two reasons: Dagger Island, and Bog of Desolation. Everything else is a breeze, it just takes time. HH are by far the easiest part of taming. If I were you, I would just hit dagger up until its over with. Its probably the most painful part, if only because of the competition of many other new tamers that just don't take care of their tames.

edit: There's also nothing wrong with just going other places just for fun. It's good to go and do stuff to liven up your game in UO, because straight grinding will make you bored. But just be aware it will be slower, without a doubt. Maybe try to go to dagger when you suspect no other tamers to be there; off hours, or when you observe less competition.

Well, I seem to find lots of animals in the woods. Escpecially cougars seem to give good gains. :) Dagger just seem like a big time consumer due to the killing off pets. But maybe that idea about luring them into the orcs' nest could work. Maybe I just need to find some good ways to proceed. I'll try the woods for some time though.

Ye can always just dump them inthe dungeon just inside of it. to get them off the map without any effort pretty much

Yeah, I did that. But they are so slow when following me, and all the houses mess them up so I loose pets on the way. =((((
