What a miserable community...

Post by Timelord »

I know UO in the beginning was a little dog eat dog... but UOSA is just plain miserable as a community of players. The game is not at all made for new players in any way... every single inch of real estate in the game world is taken (probably by the same 20 players)...you can maybe place a small house...maybe but that's definitely it. 99.8% of the people playing this game would sooner kill you than talk to you. Every single person in the game is out to kill you, loot you and take everything you own at any time. I can completely see why new players don't really use this shard.

Dont get me wrong in the year Ive been playing I did actually meet 3 nice people. There is a .2% out there of decent friendly players. I just wish along with the reds and unsavory types there were a few blues you could meet that weren't half an inch from red themselves.

I guess this is standard for an MMO of this dated type and it's unavoidable. Just sad I guess..

Thats kind of what your getting into in this era. But thats what i find most fun about it myself. To each their own.

In regards to housing, at least it is relatively easy to get a house (or Tower) through an in game transaction instead of using IRL cash on ebay, which was the standard back in the era this shard represents.

In regards to the rampant PKing, do not fear, BiH is here now and we will be patrolling this shard and taking out the trash soon.

Hi Friend,

I have actually noticed that there are MANY helpful community members, I find that it might be best to start with a simple introduction to yourself, and maybe ask some of the vets if someone could could give a helping hand.

There is also the idea of finding a guild to be part of, there is MANY guilds out there looking for members, and if you are not interested in a guild, you can always just ask around if anyone wants to farm with you, I am sure you would find plenty of people willing.

Again, do not be turned off by the few who are still stuck in the "elite" mentality, because there are plenty out there who are willing to give you a helping hand.

Enjoy, I hope you continue to give it a try, as you wont be disappointed if you give it a shot.

Best regards,

Your right in a way i suppose this era of uo is def one of the hardest if not the hardest.
Its not easy if you dont know what your doing your going to die alot.
Also Id rather be killed everytime i saw a player then to have everyone just conversate all the time Makes the game a little more risky.

Wow you must be a miserable person to talk to. When I first started I was friended to a small house to train in, given bandages, given gold to buy up skills, and given plenty of good advice about the shard. Had a small of my own within a week or so, and am on my way to bigger things. I have met MANY friendly people on this shard, only ran into a few reds (one of which rez'd me and didn't loot me), and have had a lot of fun.

Indeed, my first thought was that this was a very miserable negative post in general.
Yes theres reds, and people controlling the various markets *waves at Vega*.

But this is how I remember it, I couldn't place a house to save my life back between 97 and 99 (Yes, I managed to place a trammie Villa).

.2% of players are nice? I haven't met you? I'm as far from a red as they come...
then again, 79.5% of statistics are made up on the spot.

I agree. I love it! Although I think the above comment only holds partly true when out on the field.
Although your observation about housing is also true and alittle lame; when you play on the shard for years and allowed a house per character with 3 accounts per person, there's going to be that natural monopolization.

Gotta take the good with the bad. It's hard to preserve that cutthroat environment from back in the day unless you really embrace it like this shard has. Otherwise it's just another pseudo trammel wonderland.

Best advice for new players is to get those gold stacks healthy > buy a home > then go search for a guild and/or start buying/selling/trading with the community. Once you get your name out there, you'll notice less random gankings and you might earn ALITTLE respect from the community.

haha... in all seriousness - I don't know how you can have this view of the world if you've actually played for a year. I started out lone-rangering it up by choice, but inevitably, have met some great people who have helped me despite my lonerish attitude and hectic IRL schedule. Heck - even some of the, as you say "unsavory" people, have shown human decency in-game. Either you have had EXTREMELY bad luck, or you're a "glass half empty" person that doesn't project a positive attitude, thus getting the same negativity in return.

PS.... someone find me a mid-level house -and/or- buy my sweet small

the housing part I can get on board with.

but this: "99.8% of the people playing this game would sooner kill you than talk to you. Every single person in the game is out to kill you, loot you and take everything you own at any time."

this is what keeps me coming back.

Housing is NOT scarce here. You can make enough money in a DAY to buy a small deed and place it all over the map.

Yes the bigger spots are taken but JUST BUY ONE. My god. Some people want everything on a fucking platter.

Yes Vega and others including me control a lot of housing. But we're constantly selling houses. Even castles and keeps come up for bid. The housing market is totally liquid.

Nearly every time I've been PK'ed, I've been resurrected and given at least my runes and a recall scroll back, or a gate to town. Can't ever remember that happening on OSI.

Yes there are people trying to kill you, grief you, loot you, or clean out your house and post it on the forums. Once you stop taking yourself and your pixels so seriously you'll realize that it's all part of the fun.
